Ready-made route

Malabar

From the Deccan plateau up to the tea hills and down to the ocean

Days13–16
Distance~1300 km

An author's route down the west: it starts on the Deccan plateau at 923 metres, climbs to the Nilgiri tea hills at 2249, then drops to sea level and stays on the coast for the rest of the way. The temperature swing does half the storytelling: you pack a sweater for Ooty and swim in Gokarna the same week.

Stops

Bengaluru · 2 nights

The gentlest start in India: 923 metres of elevation mean the megacity never gets truly hot. Coffee, bookshops and the evening plateau air.

overnight · 270 km — The sleeper bus is the classic way up: you leave in the evening heat and wake in the cool among pine and tea. Coimbatore airport is the alternative gateway, 85 km from Ooty.

Ooty & Coonoor · 2–3 nights

The climb. Tea terraces, pine, mist and the narrow-gauge Nilgiri railway: the coldest point of the route at 2249 metres.

6–7 hrs · 280 km — Down the Nilgiri hairpins and across the Kerala plain. The descent is the sharpest temperature change of the whole route.

Kochi · 3 nights

Down to sea level and into the backwaters. Four faiths share one waterfront here, which is the whole argument for stopping longer.

overnight · 570 km — Sleeper buses run the coast from Kochi to Udupi through Mangalore. Trains cover the same corridor along the Konkan line.

Udupi · 1–2 nights

The temple town and the reason South Indian vegetarian food tastes the way it does: Udupi cuisine is named after this place.

2–3 hrs · 100 km — Murudeshwar station stands right at the temple. Trains from Udupi, Manipal and Mangalore run regularly.

Murudeshwar · 1 nights

One night for one silhouette: the giant Shiva above the ocean is best at dusk and at first light, and nothing else here needs longer.

2 hrs · 80 km — The Gokarna–Murudeshwar–Udupi stretch is excellent coastal road; a rented car or scooter is the pleasure option here.

Gokarna · 3–4 nights

The finish line: temple town by day, beach walks between coves by evening. The route ends where the coast stops being a transit corridor.
