Towards Agra the same trains are a little quicker: the Gatimaan 12050 runs from NZM in 1 h 40 min and the Vande Bharats in about 1 h 36 min to 1 h 40 min. The Gatimaan was launched in April 2016 as India's first semi-high-speed train, built for 160 km/h, with AC chair cars and executive class; today it runs on beyond Agra to Gwalior and Jhansi.
The spread of fares, ~₹100–860 (approx., August 2026), covers everything from a second-class seat on an ordinary express to the chair car on the fast trains. Tickets open 60 days ahead and sell out in season; IRCTC lists them first and without a markup. Timetables change, so check the times on IRCTC or NTES when you book.
Friday is the shared day off
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays and the Gatimaan does not run. If you are doing Agra as a day trip from Delhi, any other day of the week works; this one does not.
By road
Car with a driver
Sedan ~₹2,000–2,600, 3–3.5 hours on the Yamuna Expressway, toll about ₹440 each way (approx., August 2026). Door to door and no station queues, which suits families.
Bus
UPSRTC and private coaches, AC and electric, from ~₹224 (approx., August 2026), 3.5–5 hours. The cheapest option; traffic at the Delhi end can add an hour. In Delhi they use Sarai Kale Khan, the southern terminal for Agra and Rajasthan.
Arriving in Delhi
Delhi has four main railway stations: New Delhi (NDLS), Old Delhi (DLI), Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) and Anand Vihar (ANVT). The Gatimaan and the Vande Bharats from Agra arrive at NZM; the Shatabdi goes to New Delhi (NDLS).
- Taxis. A cab hailed off the street asks 3–10 times the fair price. Use an app or a prepaid counter.
- Metro. A QR ticket comes from the DMRC app or through WhatsApp; the last trains run around 23:30.
- Flying out the same day. The Airport Express runs from New Delhi station to Terminal 3 in 20–25 minutes, every 10–15 minutes from 04:45 to 23:30, ~₹65 (August 2026). From T1 the line into town is the Magenta, not this one.
Part of the Golden Triangle
Delhi–Agra is the first leg of the classic Delhi, Agra and Jaipur loop. One night in Agra rather than a day trip buys you sunrise at the Taj; Delhi itself deserves two to three nights. See the Golden Triangle route.
