Fine dining in Pune
Pune's fine dining sits mostly in Koregaon Park. Three restaurants lead it: Malaka Spice for Southeast Asian food in a courtyard, Savya Rasa for regional South Indian cooking, and Dario's for vegetarian Italian in a garden. All three take vegetarians seriously, which matters in this city. Here is what each one does, the bars at the same price level nearby, and the local alternative.
Three restaurants and what they do
All three are in the top price band (₹₹₹) of the India GO base.
Malaka Spice, Koregaon Park
Southeast Asian cooking built on chef Cheeru Chandawarkar's travels through Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea and Japan: satays, curries, wok-tossed greens. It has run for more than 25 years, in a lantern-lit courtyard in a Koregaon Park bylane. The vegetarian and vegan menu is long enough to order from all evening, with seafood and meat alongside.
Savya Rasa, Koregaon Park
Regional South Indian food served as fine dining. By the restaurant's own account the menu draws on four states: Kongunadu and Chettinad cooking from Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and Nellore from Andhra Pradesh, Mangalore and north Karnataka, Malabar and central Kerala, with community cuisines such as Nasrani and Moplah. Recipes were collected from home kitchens across the south; there are separate vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus.
Dario's, Koregaon Park
A pure-vegetarian Italian restaurant at Hotel Sunderban, in a quiet Koregaon Park lane: wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, risotto and tiramisu in a garden, with an Art Deco bar. The calm option of the three, and the obvious one if everyone at the table is vegetarian.
At the same price level: bars and bistros
If the evening is more about drinks than a long menu, these three are in the same ₹₹₹ band and the same part of the city.
Elephant & Co., Kalyani Nagar
A cocktail gastropub known for inventive drinks, with burgers, crispy lotus stem and plates to share, and live music.
Mix@36, The Westin, Koregaon Park
A rooftop lounge on the top floor of the hotel, with views over the Mula-Mutha river and the city; cocktails and bar bites, best at sunset.
The Sassy Spoon, Koregaon Park
An all-day bistro with European, Mediterranean and Asian plates, indoor and outdoor seating; good for a smart brunch or dessert and drinks.
The local way to mark an occasion
Fine dining is not the only way Pune celebrates at the table. A full Maharashtrian thali is a sit-down meal of a dozen or more dishes on one steel platter, refilled until you stop, at a fraction of the price (₹₹). Shabree, on top of Hotel Parichay on FC Road, is where locals bring visitors: pithla-bhakri, thalipeeth, koshimbir, puran poli and shrikhand, explained dish by dish. Hotel Shreyas in Deccan Gymkhana has served its vegetarian Maharashtrian thali since 1966. More in the Pune thali and what to eat in Pune.
Where it is: Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar
Koregaon Park is the leafy district east of the old city around the Osho meditation resort, with villas, cafes and the city's restaurant evenings; Kalyani Nagar is its neighbour across the Mula-Mutha river. Neither is on the doorstep of a metro station: the nearest are Ruby Hall Clinic and Kalyani Nagar, then an auto-rickshaw. From the old city or Deccan, an app cab is the simple answer; fares across the centre start at about ₹150. More in getting around Pune and nightlife.
Before you go
- For vegetarians — Dario's is fully vegetarian; Malaka Spice has a long vegetarian and vegan menu; Savya Rasa keeps a separate vegetarian menu. More in vegetarian Pune.
- For a drink with dinner — Dario's has its own bar; Elephant & Co. and Mix@36 are cocktail places first.
- For a view — Mix@36 on the roof of The Westin is the one with the river below.
- For something only Pune has — The thali at Shabree or Shreyas says more about the city than any of the international menus.
