Pune nightlife: pubs, breweries and rooftop bars
Going out in Pune mostly means craft beer, cocktails and a long dinner. The bars cluster in Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar in the east, with a second scene of pubs in Aundh and Baner to the west, and the city's own breweries are the easiest way in. Maharashtra's drinking rules are stricter than most visitors expect, so they come first.
The rules: age, permit, dry days
Age: the legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25, and bars may ask for ID, so carry your passport or a clear copy.
Permit: on paper, drinking in Maharashtra needs a permit. The State Excise Department issues a one-day permit for foreign liquor (Form FL-F) for ₹5; its online form checks age through Aadhaar, India's resident ID, so it is built for residents. In practice the permit rule is largely not enforced in licensed bars.
Where: drinking in public places such as parks is illegal. Keep it to bars, restaurants and your hotel.
Dry days: sales usually stop on national holidays, during elections and on some religious festival days. In Maharashtra the list includes Republic Day, Maharashtra Day, Independence Day and Anant Chaturdashi, the last day of Ganeshotsav, and the district collector can add a day at a week's notice.
The national picture is on alcohol in India and dry states.
Where to go out
Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar. The east side is the centre of it. Koregaon Park's leafy lanes of old villas turn, in the evening, to the restaurants and bars of the main lanes; Kalyani Nagar next door has the city's best-known cocktail bar. Metro to Ruby Hall Clinic or Kalyani Nagar, then a rickshaw.
Aundh and Baner. The IT west, with malls, restaurants and pubs that run late for a young crowd of tech workers. There is no metro here, so it is a cab ride.
FC Road and Deccan. A student mile rather than a bar street: the cafes hum till about eleven.
Camp and the old city. MG Road is for an evening promenade, and the old cafes close early. In the peths the bazaars are quiet by nine, while Dagdusheth Ganpati stays lit and busy late. For non-drinking evenings, see evenings in Pune.
How to choose: four kinds of night
Most of these are at the ₹₹₹ end of the city's prices.
Craft beer
Pune brews its own. Effingut is the landmark brewery, with several branches and lively weekends; Independence Brewing Company is the pick for experimental sours and ciders; Doolally Taproom has a rooftop and light, sessionable beers. Two or three of them make an easy beer crawl.
Cocktails and live music
Elephant & Co. in Kalyani Nagar is the city's best-known cocktail gastropub: inventive drinks, burgers and shared plates, and live music into the night.
Rooftops
Mix@36 tops The Westin in Koregaon Park, with views over the Mula-Mutha river and the skyline; it is pricey and polished, a special-evening place. The JW Marriott on Senapati Bapat Road is known for its rooftop scene too.
A drink with dinner
Malaka Spice serves Southeast Asian food in a lantern-lit Koregaon Park courtyard; Dario's is vegetarian Italian in a garden with an Art Deco bar; The Sassy Spoon is an all-day bistro that turns into an evening drinks spot. More in restaurants in Pune.
Getting back safely
Book a cab or an auto-rickshaw through an app (Uber, Ola or Rapido) rather than hailing one in the street late at night, which the UK government also advises against; a cab across the centre starts from about ₹150. Don't leave drinks unattended or accept them from strangers. In an emergency call 112; more on safety in India and emergency numbers.
