The rack climb: steam from Mettupalayam to Coonoor
India's only rack railway takes its carriages up a toothed rail from the plains to Coonoor with a steam locomotive.
from ₹15 · Daily, year round. Train 56136 leaves Mettupalayam 07:10, reaches Coonoor 10:30 (10 min stop), Ooty 11:55. Downhill train 56137 leaves Ooty 14:00, Coonoor 15:05/15:15, Mettupalayam 17:30. Extra summer services are sometimes added between Mettupalayam and Coonoor around April–June.
The short hop: Coonoor to Ooty on the toy train
A one-hour metre-gauge run through Wellington, Ketti and Lovedale that can be caught on the day without a two-month-old reservation.
from ₹10 · Daily. Coonoor to Ooty: 56141 at 07:45 (arrive 09:00) and 56143 at 12:35 (arrive 13:45); the through train 56136 also calls at Coonoor 10:40. Ooty to Coonoor: 56142 at 12:15 (arrive 13:15), and the through train 56137 at 14:00.
