Gaur (Indian bison)

Estate workers here have lived alongside gaur for generations and work near them without alarm. The animals usually ignore people who keep their distance: this is a coexistence situation, not a danger zone.

Bos gaurus

Nilgiri tahr

A joint Tamil Nadu and Kerala survey in April 2025 counted roughly 2,655 to 2,668 tahr across both states, with Tamil Nadu's share rising about 21 per cent year on year. The Nilgiri Tahr Project was launched in 2022.

Nilgiritragus hylocrius

Sambar deer

Sambar are the main large prey of leopards and tigers across the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which is why their numbers on the downs matter beyond the deer themselves.

Rusa unicolor

Nilgiri langur

Present around Kotagiri, Coonoor and Ooty in the remaining forest, but not a garden animal: a reasonable hope on a forested road, not something to expect in a park.
