Animals in Mussoorie

← Mussoorie

Himalayan goral

The commonest large wild mammal of the lower Himalaya, and the one most often seen from a road; herds are small, usually under six animals.

Naemorhedus goral

Yellow-throated marten

Until 2013 the Jabarkhet forest was being logged and choked by invasive weeds; run as a private reserve since 2015, it now has yellow-throated martens on its camera traps alongside leopards, black bears and goral.

Martes flavigula

Barking deer (Indian muntjac)

The barking call is how most Himalayan trackers learn that a leopard is moving nearby; it is the forest's alarm system, not a threat display.

Muntiacus muntjak

Rhesus macaque

Fed at Hanuman temples, which is why troops concentrate around them. Feeding is what makes the animals bold, so the temples that discourage it have calmer monkeys.

Macaca mulatta
