Mammal · Martes flavigula

Yellow-throated marten

IUCN LC · Least concern

A long, low, fast-moving forest carnivore with a golden throat and a black tail, hunting in pairs by day.

How to recognise it

A flash of gold and black bounding across a forest road. Unlike most carnivores it is diurnal, so a daytime sighting is realistic.

Where to see it

Mussoorie

Until 2013 the Jabarkhet forest was being logged and choked by invasive weeds; run as a private reserve since 2015, it now has yellow-throated martens on its camera traps alongside leopards, black bears and goral.

Naggar

Martens raid beehives and orchards, which is why hill farmers know them well; they are also among the few animals that hunt in coordinated pairs.
