Bookstores in Mumbai

← Mumbai

Mumbai's bookshops gather in two places. In Fort, in the south, Kitab Khana sits on MG Road among the Victorian buildings and the pavement book stalls. In Bandra West, Title Waves runs a busy calendar of launches and talks, and Trilogy is a quiet two-floor shop and lending library. Here is what each is good for and how to fit them into a day.

Three bookshops and what they are for

Cheap pavement stalls are further down.

Kitab Khana, Fort

An independent bookstore in Somaiya Bhavan on MG Road, with curated shelves and wooden interiors: a calm hour in the middle of the busy Fort district. More on Kitab Khana.

Title Waves, Bandra West

8,000 square feet in the St Paul Media Complex, described as the city's first large-format boutique bookstore, with a coffee nook and corners for reading. Most weeks there is a launch, an author talk or an open mic. Come on an event evening for the crowd, or on a weekday afternoon for the shelves. More on Title Waves.

Trilogy, Bandra West

Two floors of a house near Joggers' Park, half bookshop, half lending library, run since 2014 by two readers. Small presses, translations and a deep fantasy section; little is there because it sells. It won Publishing Next's Bookstore of the Year in 2018. Check the opening hours before crossing town.

Cheap books: the pavements of Fort and Colaba

For second-hand and cheap books, look to the street. The pavement book stalls of Fort, among the Gothic universities and banks, are part of the district's character, and the stalls of Colaba Causeway sell books alongside clothes and souvenirs. On Colaba Causeway bargaining is expected. More on markets in Mumbai.

Fitting bookshops into a day

In the south, Kitab Khana and the Fort stalls combine with Kala Ghoda's galleries and Chimanlals, a paper shop trading since the 1950s that makes block-printed letter paper and cards: light, flat gifts for a reader. The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (30 January – 7 February 2027) fills the same streets. In Bandra, Title Waves and Trilogy are both in Bandra West and can be combined in one visit.
