Best time: Oct–Mar

← Mathura

Mathura has the climate of the north Indian plains: a short, genuinely cold winter, a fierce dry heat from April to June, and a monsoon that can push the Yamuna over its ghats. October to March is the comfortable season, and May–June the months to avoid. Below is the climate by month and what it means for a pilgrimage; for today's forecast, use the IMD link at the end.

What each season feels like

October–November, the best weeks. The rain has gone, days are about 35 °C in October and 30 °C in November, and nights cool from 21 to 14 °C. Evening aarti (the lamp ceremony) on the Yamuna ghats is warm and clear.

December–January, cold. Days of 21–23 °C and nights of 8–9 °C. Dawn on the river is cold enough for a shawl. Temples and lanes are comfortable to walk for hours.

February–March, spring and Holi. Days climb from 26 to 32 °C, nights from 12 to 16 °C, and it is almost dry. This is Holi season in Braj, the best-known reason to come.

April–June, the heat. April reaches 40 °C, May averages 42 °C and June 40 °C, with nights of 23 °C in April and 27–28 °C in May and June. The stone around temples burns underfoot in the afternoon, and barefoot visits are only bearable early in the morning.

July–September, the monsoon. On IMD's normal dates the monsoon covers this part of Uttar Pradesh around 27 June (the figure for Agra, the nearest city in IMD's table) and withdraws around 28 September. July–August bring 170–213 mm a month over nine to ten rainy days, with days of 35–37 °C and heavy humidity. The Yamuna rises: in July 2023 it flooded the ghats.

Best time to visit Mathura

October–November and February–March are the best months: warm days, cool evenings and very little rain. December and January are good if you pack for real cold. Avoid May and June, when the heat is dangerous for long hours outdoors. The monsoon months are possible, but the river can flood and the humidity is heavy.

Holi and Janmashtami: weather is the smaller problem

The two biggest dates in Mathura's year bring extreme crowds. [Holi](/en/festivals/holi/mathura/) falls on the Phalguna full moon in March (3–4 March in 2026, 22–23 March in 2027), in pleasant spring weather. [Janmashtami](/en/festivals/janmashtami/mathura/), Krishna's birthday, falls in the monsoon (4–5 September in 2026, 25–26 August in 2027): hot, humid and often wet. Book rooms early, keep valuables close and plan for slow movement in the old town on both.

✅ What to pack

Mathura needs different kit for each end of the year.

  • December–January: warm layers — A sweater or shawl for nights of 8–9 °C and cold mornings by the river.
  • April–June: heat protection — Loose covering clothes, a hat and plenty of water for 40–42 °C days.
  • July–September: rain gear — An umbrella and shoes that can get wet.
