How to get around Mathura
E-rickshaws: the city runs on them
They cover every stretch between the station, Dwarkadhish, Vishram Ghat and the Vrindavan stand. Shared ones follow fixed lines and cost almost nothing.
~₹10–30 a seat when shared, ~₹100–150 for the whole vehicle
Auto-rickshaws
Faster than an e-rickshaw over longer legs and the usual choice for the Vrindavan road. No meters, so settle the price before you sit down.
~₹20–30 a seat, ~₹150–200 for the whole ride
🚶 On foot in the temple core
The lanes around Krishna Janmabhoomi are narrow enough to be pedestrian in practice, and the security zone at the complex means bags and phones are left behind anyway.
free
Cycle rickshaws
Still alive by the station and in the old town, and pleasant for a kilometre or two, but no use for anything longer.
~₹20–50 for a short hop
Uber and Ola
Formally present, but coverage inside Mathura wobbles and cars can take a while. Intercity rides to Agra or Delhi work far more reliably.
from ~₹100 across town
On Janmashtami vehicles are stopped about 3 km from Janmabhoomi: everyone walks the last stretch, taxis included.
