Lesser whistling duck

Santragachi Jheel is a small urban lake beside a railway yard that becomes one of eastern India's densest wintering duck sites. A published census recorded 27 waterbird species there, with the lesser whistling duck making up the great majority.

Dendrocygna javanica

Red-crested pochard

One of the ducks that make a single stretch of open water worth a winter morning; flocks build from November and disperse by March.

Netta rufina

White-throated kingfisher

The state bird of West Bengal, and one that does not need water: it hunts lizards and insects on lawns and roadside verges across the city.

Halcyon smyrnensis

Asian openbill

Openbill colonies settle inside villages, in mango and tamarind trees over houses, and are generally left alone by the households below.
