Animals in Kolkata

← Kolkata

Fishing cat

The state animal of West Bengal. One of its strongholds is the East Kolkata Wetlands: the fish ponds east of the city that also treat Kolkata's waste water, which makes it one of the few state animals living on a city's own sewage system.

Prionailurus viverrinus

Indian flying fox

A 2017 study counted about 945 flying foxes in the colony over Alipore Zoo and followed them out at dusk: they fed within about 1.3 kilometres of the roost, and banyans drew the most bats, then peepals.

Pteropus medius

Five-striped palm squirrel

The stripes are explained as the mark of Rama's fingers, stroking the squirrel that carried pebbles to help build the bridge to Lanka.
