Forts and palaces of Hyderabad
Hyderabad has two forts worth the climb and a handful of palaces. Golconda, the Qutb Shahi citadel on the west side of the city, is the big one; Bhongir is a granite-dome fort about 48 km east. Of the palaces, Chowmahalla in the Old City is the Nizams' court and is open as a museum, while Falaknuma on its hill is a Taj hotel that non-guests enter only with a booking.
The forts
Both sit on granite, both mean steps and heat, and both are best early or late in the day.
Golconda Fort
Golconda began as a Kakatiya mud fort and became the capital of the Qutb Shahi sultans, who rebuilt it in granite; the court moved to the new city of Hyderabad in 1590. The diamonds of the nearby mines were traded here, and the Koh-i-Noor and the Hope are said to have been kept in its vault. A clap under the dome of the Fateh Darwaza, the entrance gate, is meant to carry up to the Bala Hisar pavilion at the summit, about 380 steps above. The evening sound-and-light show has a separate ticket.
Bhongir Fort
A single dome of granite rising out of the plain about 48 km east of the city, with a Western Chalukya fort attributed to King Vikramaditya VI spread over it: walls, cisterns and gateways following the curve of the rock. The way up mixes cut steps with bare slab and takes 45 to 90 minutes, and the top looks over a flat Deccan in every direction. Telangana Tourism has also set up a rock-climbing school on the face.
The palaces
Four royal or near-royal houses, each open in a different way.
Chowmahalla Palace
The official residence and court of the Nizams, begun in the mid-18th century near Charminar; the name means four palaces. The southern courtyard holds the four neoclassical mahals around a pool, the northern one the Khilwat Mubarak, the durbar hall under its chandeliers. The palace still belongs to the family and is open as a museum, with an armoury, vintage cars and documents.
Falaknuma Palace
Completed in 1893 for Viqar-ul-Umra, prime minister of Hyderabad State, and later the Nizam's: an Italian-and-Tudor palace on a hill about 5 km from Charminar, laid out in the shape of a scorpion. Inside are Venetian chandeliers, a dining table set for 101 and a library with a carved walnut ceiling. It is now the Taj Falaknuma hotel.
The Nizam's Museum (Purani Haveli)
An 18th-century Nizam residence in the Old City, now the most domestic of the royal collections: the silver-jubilee gifts of the seventh Nizam, a gold tiffin box, a hand-operated lift and the sixth Nizam's Burma-teak wardrobe, 176 feet long over two floors.
British Residency, Koti
Not a Nizam palace but the Palladian mansion of about 1805 built for James Kirkpatrick, the East India Company's Resident, and the house at the centre of William Dalrymple's 'White Mughals'. It stands inside a women's college campus; World Monuments Fund work has brought back the Durbar Hall, its Burma-teak floors and the lion staircase.
How to group them
Old City: Chowmahalla, the Nizam's Museum and Charminar are a short ride from each other; Falaknuma is on the hill to the south. Chowmahalla and the Nizam's Museum both close on Fridays, so plan the Old City for another day.
Golconda side: the fort, the Qutb Shahi Tombs about a kilometre to the north, and Taramati Baradari, a twelve-arched Qutb Shahi pavilion whose roof looks back at the fort. One way to do it: the tombs in the late afternoon, then the fort and its evening light show. Toli Masjid is on the road between Golconda and the Old City.
Bhongir: a separate trip east of the city; go early, because heat is the real obstacle on the rock, and the Yadadri temple is on the same road.
Season matters for all of them: November to February is dry and mild, while April to June brings 40°C and more, which makes any climb hard work.
Getting inside Falaknuma
The palace is a working hotel, so the gate turns away walk-ins. Without a room, the ways in are a reserved palace tour with tea or a table at one of its restaurants, such as Adaa for Hyderabadi food. Book ahead and dress smartly.
FAQ
What are the visiting hours for Taj Falaknuma Palace?
There are no open visiting hours: it is a hotel. Non-guests come on the booked heritage tour with high tea, usually in the afternoon around 15:00 and from roughly ₹3,500 a head, or with a restaurant reservation.
Is Chowmahalla Palace worth visiting?
Yes, if you want to see how the Nizams held court: the Khilwat durbar hall, the four mahals around the pool and the collections are all in one walled compound near Charminar. It is closed on Fridays.
Is there a castle in Hyderabad?
Not a castle in the European sense, but Golconda is a full fortified citadel with gates, ramparts and a summit pavilion. Falaknuma Palace, with its Italian and Tudor styling, is the most European-looking royal building.
Which is the main fort in Hyderabad?
Golconda, on the western side of the city: the Qutb Shahi capital before Hyderabad itself was founded. Bhongir Fort is the other one people visit, about 48 km east.
How many steps are there to the top of Golconda Fort?
About 380 stone steps from the gate area to the Bala Hisar at the summit. There is little shade on the climb, so avoid midday.
