Bhongir Fort

← Hyderabad

AreaBhongir (Bhuvanagiri), ~50 km east

A single dome of granite rises out of the plain about 48 km east of the city, and a 10th-century Chalukyan fort is spread across the whole of it: walls, cisterns and gateways following the curve of the stone. The way up mixes cut steps with bare rock slab and takes 45 to 90 minutes; from the top the Deccan runs flat to the horizon in every direction. Telangana Tourism also runs rock climbing and rappelling on the face. The gate opens around 10:00, and heat is the real obstacle: go early or late, and fold in Yadadri or Kolanupaka on the same road.
