Fine dining in Hyderabad

← Hyderabad

Fine dining in Hyderabad means three different evenings. The Nizami one is royal Hyderabadi cooking in a former palace or a five-star dining room; the South Indian one takes the cooking of the four southern states as seriously as any tasting menu; the third is world food with a view of Durgam Cheruvu lake. Five of them are listed on this page; here is how to choose and what to arrange in advance.

AdaaThe definitive luxury Hyderabadi fine-dining experience, set in a former Nizam's palace.
DakshinA landmark, award-level South Indian fine-dining experience with a pristine kitchen and deep regional menu.
FirdausA long-standing upscale destination for authentic Hyderabadi cuisine in a five-star setting.
Fusion 9A dependable upscale all-day diner spanning world cuisines with a rooftop sky bar; safe for varied palates.
Simply SouthA chef-led, award-winning showcase of authentic regional South Indian cuisine; a fine-dining standout.

How to choose: three kinds of evening

All of these sit at ₹₹₹, the top price mark in the India GO guide; exact prices are on the restaurants' own menus.

Nizami Hyderabadi in a palace or a grand hotel

Adaa is inside the Taj Falaknuma Palace, the Nizam-era palace on a hill above the Old City, now run as a hotel by the Taj group; its chefs recreate Nizami royal recipes, and it is the city's most special-occasion Hyderabadi table. Firdaus at the Taj Krishna in Banjara Hills is the calmer, long-standing alternative, cooking Hyderabadi and North-West Frontier dishes: khatti dal on the vegetarian side, nalli gosht and pathar ka gosht on the other, and haleem in season.

South Indian, done as an occasion

Dakshin at ITC Kakatiya in Begumpet covers the four southern states, from appams with vegetable stew to rare regional dishes, with live Carnatic music and filter coffee poured from a height. Simply South in Jubilee Hills is chef Chalapathi Rao's restaurant of regional cooking from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, including dishes rarely found on restaurant menus. If you prefer mild food, say so when ordering.

World food with a lake view

Olive Bistro sits above Durgam Cheruvu: a Mediterranean rooftop with whitewashed walls, wood-fired pizzas, mezze, cocktails and live music. Fusion 9 in Jubilee Hills is a long-running multi-cuisine room, from pizzas and sushi to Indian mains, with an open-air deck and sky bar; its Durgam Cheruvu outlet adds the lake. These are the choice for a group with mixed tastes. More in rooftop restaurants in Hyderabad.

Dinner at Falaknuma Palace

The palace, completed in 1893 on a hill about 5 km from Charminar, is now a Taj hotel, and that is the only way inside. Non-guests need a reservation: either a table at one of its restaurants or the heritage walk with high tea, held daily around 15:00 from approximately ₹3,500 a head. Book in advance and dress smartly; the gate turns away walk-ins. Inside, a dining table set for 101 and one of India's finest private libraries are part of the visit. More on Falaknuma Palace.

Where they are

Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills, neighbouring upmarket districts in the west of the city, hold most of the list: Firdaus, Simply South, Fusion 9 and, on Durgam Cheruvu lake between Jubilee Hills and Madhapur, Olive Bistro. Begumpet has Dakshin at ITC Kakatiya. Falaknuma is in the Old City, on the other side of town, so pair Adaa with a day around Charminar rather than with Jubilee Hills.

Good to know before you book

A few things decide how the evening goes.

  • Haleem has a season — Firdaus serves haleem only in season: the dish is cooked in Ramzan, and Hyderabadi haleem has a geographical indication of its own. More on it in what to eat in Hyderabad.
  • Vegetarians are covered — Every restaurant here has a vegetarian side; at the Nizami tables ask for khatti dal and the vegetable dishes rather than the meat-led set.
  • The best meal is not always the dearest — Many of the dishes Hyderabad is known for are at their best in old biryani houses and Irani cafés at ₹–₹₹. See restaurants in Hyderabad.
