Getting around

Taxi apps and auto-rickshaws in India

← All guides

In Indian cities, book rides through an app: Uber and Ola almost everywhere, Rapido for bikes and autos, Namma Yatri in Bengaluru, local apps in Goa and Kolkata. Without an app, use the meter where it is official (Delhi, Mumbai) or fix the price before you get in, and keep small notes: autos are paid in cash.

App first, haggling last

Getting around an Indian city looks chaotic: horns, rickshaws three abreast, drivers calling out from every corner. The fix is boring and effective: book through an app whenever you can. You see the price before you get in, the route is tracked, and the driver's name and number plate are on your screen.

Which app depends on the city:

  • Uber and Ola work in most large cities, for cars, autos and (Ola) bikes.
  • Rapido runs bike taxis, autos and cabs in most cities: the fastest way through traffic jams, if you are comfortable riding pillion.
  • inDrive appears in some cities; you offer a price and drivers accept or counter.
  • Namma Yatri in Bengaluru: autos and cabs on a zero-commission model (drivers pay a flat subscription and keep the fare).
  • Yatri Sathi in Kolkata: a government-backed app for autos and taxis.
  • Goa is the exception: Uber and Ola have historically not operated there; the local options are GoaMiles and the state Goa Taxi App. Goa's taxi-app scene shifts, so check what works when you arrive.

Install two apps, not one: if the first has no cars nearby, the second often does.

Phone number and payment

Phone number. Uber works with the account you already have: its help pages say you can ride abroad without changing the country setting. Many Indian apps, though, register only with an Indian mobile number, and drivers call or message to find you. A local SIM or eSIM solves both problems; buy one on arrival with your passport and visa.

Paying. Payment depends on the service and the city:

  • Uber Auto moved to a subscription model in 2025: Uber suggests a fare, but the final amount is agreed between you and the driver, and you pay the driver directly in cash or by UPI to the driver's personal UPI ID. Uber says cards, in-app UPI and Uber credits cannot be used for these Auto trips.
  • Visitor UPI wallets (such as UPI One World) pay merchant QR codes only, not a person's own UPI ID, so for autos keep cash in small notes.
  • For cab rides, check the payment screen before you book: payment options differ by app and city, and some rides are paid to the driver directly, so don't count on your card working.

Keep ₹10–100 notes for the end of the ride: "no change" is a familiar line.

Airports and stations: prepaid booths

Arriving at night with luggage is when travellers overpay most. Two safe options: an app car from the marked pickup zone, or the official prepaid taxi booth, where you pay a fixed price at the counter and get a slip before you get in.

In Delhi, the Traffic Police lists prepaid booths at IGI Airport (Terminals 1, 2 and 3), at New Delhi station (Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate sides), Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin, at the Kashmiri Gate and Anand Vihar bus terminals, and at several markets, hospitals and metro stations. Its motto sums up the point: no haggling, pay in advance. Some booths run day and night, others only by day. The Delhi traffic helpline is 1095 or 011-25844444.

Other big airports have their own prepaid or official taxi counters. Ignore touts in the arrivals hall, and especially the line "the booth is closed, come with me": real drivers wait outside with name boards or in the app zone. If someone tells you your hotel has "closed" or "moved", the answer is "we're going to the address".

Official meter fares: Delhi and Mumbai

Auto-rickshaw and taxi fares are set by each state. Below are the two official tariffs checked for this guide. In other cities, fares differ and meters are often not used: agree the price before you get in, or use an app.

Delhi, auto-rickshaw₹30 for the first 1.5 km, then ₹11 per km. Night charge +25% from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Waiting ₹0.75 a minute in slow traffic. Luggage ₹10 a piece (shopping bags and a small suitcase free).
Delhi, black-and-yellow taxi₹40 for the first km, then ₹17 per km (non-AC) or ₹20 per km (AC). Night charge +25% from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Luggage ₹15 a piece.
Mumbai region, auto-rickshaw (CNG)Minimum fare ₹26, which covers 1.5 km; then ₹17.14 per km, rounded to the nearest rupee. +25% from midnight to 5 a.m. In force since 1 February 2025; drivers should carry the official tariff card.

👣 An auto-rickshaw without an app

Old towns and small places are often beyond the apps' reach. The routine below keeps it friendly.

  1. Check the app price first

Even if you won't book, the app's estimate tells you what the ride is worth.

  2. Ask for the meter

In Delhi and Mumbai autos are officially metered. If the driver refuses, take the next one.

  3. Otherwise, fix the price before you get in

Name the destination, agree the total and confirm it once more. Haggling after the ride is always lost.

  4. Have the right notes

Pay as close to the exact amount as you can; rounding up a little is the only tip expected.

✅ Safety in a taxi or auto

Serious trouble in taxis is rare; these habits make it rarer.

  • Check before you get in — Number plate, car make and model, and the driver's photo should match the app.
  • Share the trip — Uber lets you set trusted contacts and share your trip status in real time; other apps have similar buttons.
  • Know the in-app safety tools — Uber has an emergency button that shows your location and trip details to share with the authorities, plus a 24/7 safety line.
  • Stay with the app's route — If the driver wants to end the trip in the app and continue "off app" for cash, decline.
  • Trust your gut — If something feels wrong, ask to stop in a busy, well-lit place and get out.

📞 Numbers to keep

❓ Questions people ask

Does Uber work in India with a foreign number?

Yes, your existing account works without changing the country setting. A local SIM still helps, because drivers call to find you.

Can I pay an auto-rickshaw by card?

Usually not. Uber Auto is paid to the driver in cash or by UPI to the driver's own ID, which visitor wallets can't pay, so carry small notes.

How much should an auto-rickshaw cost?

In Delhi, ₹30 for the first 1.5 km plus ₹11 a km; in the Mumbai region, ₹26 minimum plus ₹17.14 a km. Elsewhere, check the app's estimate and agree before you ride.

Is Ola or Uber cheaper?

It varies by city and hour. Compare both, and Rapido or a local app, before booking.

Are bike taxis safe?

They are the fastest option in jams, but you ride pillion in heavy traffic. Wear the helmet the driver offers, or take an auto or cab.

What if the airport prepaid booth is closed?

Use an app from the official pickup zone or the airport's official taxi kiosk, never a driver who approaches you inside the hall.
