Gangamma Jatara: the week Tirupati town belongs to its goddess

The week the town below the sacred hill belongs to its old village goddess

Gangamma Jatara is the festival of Tirupati's own village goddess, held for about a week in May at the Tataiahgunta Gangamma temple in the town below Tirumala. Each day devotees go through the streets in a prescribed vesham (ritual disguise), and the festival ends before dawn after the main day with the Viswaroopa Darshanam of the goddess's great clay face. Dates: 11–19 May 2027 (expected). Everything happens in the streets and at the temple, and there are no tickets.

The temple and the Tirupati Municipal Corporation announce the dates in the press one to two weeks ahead; the jatara can move, as it did for polling day in 2024.

The legend

Legend says Tirupati was once ruled by a palegar, a local warlord, who cruelly oppressed the women of the land.

To protect them the Goddess was born as Gangamma in the village of Avilala near the town. The palegar saw the power that had come for him, and hid.

🎭

Gangamma searched for him in one disguise after another. On the fourth day she came dressed as a dora, a lord; taking her for his master, he came out and was defeated.

🕊️

Then, as Matangi, she visited the palegar's widow and consoled her: birth and death, she said, come to everyone.

So in jatara week the people of Tirupati also take on disguises: a new vesham each day, like the goddess who hunted the palegar.

Meaning

Sister of the god

Gangamma is held to be Venkateswara's sister: in jatara week the Tirumala temple sends her turmeric, vermilion and cloth, as a married daughter gets from home.

Town goddess

Gangamma is the gramadevata, guardian of Tirupati. It is said pilgrims once bowed to her before going up to Venkateswara, and some still do.

Customs

Chatimpu

The jatara opens with a night proclamation to dappu drums. At midnight turmeric and vermilion are scattered at the town's edge: until it ends, residents should not leave.

Vesham of the day

Each day has its own guise: white paste and neem sprigs for Bhairagi, vermilion paste for Banda, charcoal for Thoti, sandalwood with a neem and lemon garland for Dora.

Sapparam

On the seventh day some go to the goddess wearing a sapparam, a bamboo frame shaped like a temple tower fixed to the body. It is believed to make wishes come true.

Pongal at the temple

Women cook pongal at the temple and offer it to the goddess, along with saris, turmeric and vermilion. Ragi ambali is handed out to pilgrims across town.

Viswaroopam

On the last night a huge clay face of the goddess is built at the temple. At dawn people come for darshan, then the clay is broken up and shared out as prasad.

True or myth

While the jatara lasts, Tirupati's residents are not meant to leave town.

Where to celebrate

Tirumala

A week in May when the town below Tirumala belongs to Gangamma: a new vesham (ritual disguise) in the streets each day, and at the end her clay face, shown before dawn, then broken up and shared out.

How the week runs

The jatara opens with the Chatimpu, a proclamation made around midnight while men beat dappu drums through the old town. From then on each day has its own vesham, in a fixed order:

  • Bhairagi: white paste and a garland of neem leaves.
  • Banda: kumkum (vermilion) paste.
  • Thoti: charcoal and a neem garland.
  • Dora, the lord: sandal paste with a neem and lemon garland.
  • Mathangi, the guise in which, in the legend, Gangamma consoles the chieftain's widow.
  • Sunnapu Kundalu: white paste and charcoal dots, with a pot carried three times round the temple.

The main jatara day comes last. Women cook pongal at the temple and offer it to the goddess with saris, turmeric and vermilion, devotees come wearing sapparalu (bamboo frames shaped like a temple tower), and ragi ambali, a drink of ragi, rice and curd, is handed out across town. Gangamma is held to be the sister of Venkateswara, and the Tirumala temple sends her a sari and offerings for the festival.

After midnight a large clay image of the goddess, the Viswaroopam, is set up in front of the temple. Devotees come for its darshan before dawn; then, in the rite called Chempa Tholagimpu, the cheek of the image is removed and the clay is given out to devotees, who believe it has healing power.

Where to see it

The jatara is in Tirupati town, not on the hill. Watching is free.

The Viswaroopa Darshanam: free, with a long queue.

Planning a visit

The jatara crowd comes mostly from the region, but it falls in Tirumala's summer rush.

  1. Watch for the dates

The temple and the Tirupati Municipal Corporation announce the schedule in the press one to two weeks ahead, and it can move: it has been shifted before for an election polling day.

  2. Come for the last two days

The main jatara day and the Viswaroopa Darshanam the following dawn are the big ones; one night covers both, two are easier.

  3. Book early for May

Book a Tirupati hotel about three weeks ahead. In mid-May Tirumala sees very heavy summer-holiday crowds, so book trains into Tirupati as soon as sales open.

  4. Combine with Tirumala

If you also want darshan on the hill, book it separately through TTD; see darshan at Tirumala and Tirupati festivals.

Etiquette

The jatara is worship of a town goddess, not a costume parade. A few things help.

  • Veshams are devotion — The people in disguise are devotees keeping the day's rite. Ask before photographing someone up close.
  • Prasad is shared — Ragi ambali and, at the end, the clay of the Viswaroopam are given out as the goddess's prasad; the clay is kept at home or stirred into water and drunk.
  • Crowd on the last night — The queue for the Viswaroopa Darshanam is long and runs through the night. Keep together and follow the police at the temple.
