Tirumala Brahmotsavam: nine days of processions on the Mada streets
Serpent, swan and lion carry the god, then on the fifth night a golden Garuda
Srivari Brahmotsavam is the main festival of the year at the Venkateswara temple in Tirumala: nine days in which the processional image, Malayappa Swamy, goes round the four Mada streets each morning and evening on a different vahana (mount). Dates: 1–9 October 2027 (expected). The processions take place outside the temple and are free to watch. Darshan inside the temple, rooms on the hill and paid tickets are handled only by TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams), the temple trust, through its official website and booking portal.
TTD announces the dates on news.tirumala.org six to eight weeks ahead and releases the vahana (procession) schedule about a week before.
The legend
Legend says Brahma himself held this festival first, to thank Vishnu for coming down to earth as Venkateswara in the age of Kali.
A flag bearing Garuda opens the festival: Vishnu's servant is believed to fly to heaven to invite Brahma, Indra, Agni, Kubera and the seven sages.
For nine days the god rides out twice a day on a new vahana: serpent, swan, lion, wishing tree, sun, moon. The peak is the evening on Garuda.
On the ninth evening the flag comes down, and the guest gods are sent home until next year.
And the processions are led by a small, empty wooden chariot: it is believed that Brahma himself still conducts the festival.
Meaning
Seven hills
Tirumala's seven hills are said to be the seven hoods of Adisesha, the serpent Vishnu rests on. So on the first evening the god rides a seven-hooded serpent.
Telangana
Weavers in Gadwal spend 41 days on a pair of dhotis for the god, chanting Govinda's name. On the first day the priest dresses him and whispers that they have come.
Andal
The garlands for the Garuda evening come 650 km from Srivilliputhur. Legend says Andal wore each garland first, and the god accepted only those.
Customs
Ankurarpana
On the eve nine kinds of grain are sown in nine pots of earth and watered through the festival, to sprout like the waxing moon.
Garuda Seva
On the fifth evening the god rides the golden Garuda in the main idol's jewels, which normally stay in the sanctum: the Lakshmi necklace, the Makara Kanti.
Mohini
On the fifth morning the god appears as the enchantress Mohini, and this procession alone starts from the temple itself, in a palanquin rather than on a vahana.
Rathotsavam
On the eighth morning thousands of pilgrims haul the great wooden chariot: in this procession anyone can take hold of the rope.
Chakra Snanam
On the last morning Sudarshana, Vishnu's sacred disc, is bathed in the Swami Pushkarini tank. Pilgrims enter the water with it, then walk beneath it for its drops.

True or myth
✅ True. That lasted until 1582. Now there is one a year, or two in a year with an extra lunar month.
❌ Myth. It is the hereditary right of the Kamatam family, whose descendants pull it generation after generation.
✅ True. The first was offered on 2 August 1715, and in 2009 the Tirupati laddu received a geographical indication tag.

Worth the trip

The nine days, vahana by vahana
The order follows TTD's own description. Each day has a morning and a night procession; TTD publishes exact timings about a week ahead on news.tirumala.org.
| Eve | Ankurarpanam: nine kinds of grain are sown in earth collected for the rite. |
| Day 1 | Dhwajarohanam, the hoisting of the Garuda flag; at night the Pedda Sesha Vahanam, the great serpent. |
| Days 2–4 | Small serpent and swan, lion and pearl canopy, wish-granting tree and Sarvabhoopala, the mount of all the kings of the earth. |
| Day 5 | In the morning Mohini, the god as an enchantress; at night the Garuda Vahanam. TTD notes that a large number of pilgrims come on this day. |
| Days 6–7 | Hanumantha and, at night, the elephant; then the sun and the moon (Suryaprabha and Chandraprabha). |
| Day 8 | Rathotsavam, the chariot festival in the morning: devotees pull the temple chariot. The horse vahana follows at night. |
| Day 9 | Chakrasnanam, the bath of the Sudarshana Chakra (Vishnu's discus) in the Swami Pushkarini tank. In TTD's words devotees join it irrespective of religion, caste or creed. The flag comes down in the evening. |
Watching Garuda Seva and the other processions
Every procession is on the Mada streets around the temple, and standing there costs nothing.
- Free galleries — For the big nights TTD builds temporary galleries along the four streets, recently 190 of them for about 1.8 lakh (180,000) people, with entry from the Ring Roads. Offers of paid gallery seats come from resellers, not from TTD.
- Garuda day fills early — On Garuda Seva day the galleries reach capacity as the day goes on, and security stops further entry once they are full. Thousands are left waiting outside the Mada streets.
- Leave the car below — On the busiest day most private vehicles are sent to parking areas in Tirupati, and pilgrims go up the hill on APSRTC buses.
- Ordinary mornings — The morning processions of days 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 are the same kind of procession with a fraction of the Garuda-night crowd.
Darshan and tickets: TTD's official channels only
Watching the processions needs no ticket. Darshan of Venkateswara inside the temple is separate and works as on any other day: the free Sarva Darshan queue, or Special Entry Darshan (about ₹300) booked in advance, both entered through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. On Garuda Seva day of a recent festival the free queue took about 8 hours.
Rooms on the hill, the ₹300 quota and sevas are released on TTD's official booking portal, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, linked from TTD's website tirumala.org, roughly three months ahead and at a fixed hour, and the festival days go first.
TTD and the Tirupati police have repeatedly warned about fake websites and apps that copy TTD's portal and promise darshan, rooms or seva tickets; the police have taken down more than 30 such sites. Book only on the official portal or TTD's official app and do not pay middlemen.
TTD's traditional dress code applies inside the temple, and TTD requires non-Hindus to sign a declaration of faith in Venkateswara before entering. More in darshan at Tirumala and the temple dress code.
Where to stay and how to get up the hill
Rooms and darshan, not the processions, are what sell out.
- Stay in Tirupati
TTD runs the accommodation at Tirumala and books it online months ahead; during Brahmotsavam it is effectively full. Staying in Tirupati, about 20 km down the ghat road, and coming up for the processions is the realistic plan. See where to stay.
- Book transport early
Reserved train tickets open 60 days ahead and trains into Tirupati tighten for the festival; Tamil Nadu's transport corporations add extra buses. Routes are in how to get there.
- Arrive before the flag
To see the whole cycle, be at Tirumala on the eve of Dhwajarohanam, five days before Garuda Seva.
- Walking up
The Alipiri footpath from Tirupati has about 3,550 steps over roughly 9 km; Srivari Mettu is shorter. Both are free. After leopard sightings TTD has limited walking hours; check the current rule.
Etiquette in the crowd
The vahana processions are worship, and the crowd on the big nights is very large. Follow what TTD staff and the police tell you; general advice is in is India safe.
- Let the procession pass — Stay where the volunteers place you and do not cross in front of the vahana. People around you will call out "Govinda, Govinda" as the god passes.
