The goddess born in a lotus comes back to bathe in her own tank

The Karthika Brahmotsavam at Tiruchanur is the annual festival of Sri Padmavathi Ammavari, the goddess Padmavathi, consort of Venkateswara, at her temple about 5 km from Tirupati. It is run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), with vahana processions round the temple every morning and evening, and ends with Panchami Theertham, the holy bath in the temple tank. Dates: 5–14 December 2026.

The legend

🦶

In the Venkateswara Mahatyam the sage Bhrigu kicks Vishnu in the chest, Lakshmi's dwelling. Insulted, the goddess leaves heavenly Vaikuntha.

Vishnu follows her to earth and lives by the Tirumala hills as Srinivasa. Lakshmi, local legend says, spends twelve years in penance by the Swarnamukhi river.

🪷

In the thirteenth year, on the fifth day of the bright half of Kartika, she rises from a golden lotus in the middle of the pond as Padmavati, "born of the lotus".

💍

In another telling, King Akasha Raja found the girl in a lotus. Srinivasa sought her hand and, to hold a grand wedding, borrowed a vast sum from Kubera, god of wealth.

So the goddess's Brahmotsavam ends on the day of her appearance, Panchami Theertham: the Sudarshana disc is dipped in that very pond, and people follow it into the water.

Meaning

The goddess first

It is said a pilgrimage to Venkateswara bears fruit only after first bowing to Padmavati, who carries people's wishes to him.

Alarmel Mangai

In Tamil the goddess is Alarmel Mangai, and Tiruchanur itself is also known as Alamelu Mangapuram, "the town of Alamelu Manga".

Customs

The goddess rides out

Each day of the festival the goddess, in silk and jewels, rides gilded vahanas around the four Mada streets that ring the temple.

The chariot

On the penultimate day thousands pull the goddess's huge chariot around the Mada streets, chanting her names.

Sare from Tirumala

On the last day a procession leaves the Tirumala temple with a sari, turmeric and vermilion and comes down via Alipiri to Tiruchanur: Venkateswara's gift to his consort.

Panchami Theertham

On her appearance day the goddess's image and the Sudarshana disc are bathed, the disc is dipped in Padma Sarovaram, and tens of thousands enter the water. Its grace is said to last all day.

True or myth

Tiruchanur's Brahmotsavam ends on the goddess's appearance day.

✅ True. Panchami Theertham is taken as the day Padmavati rose from the lotus, and Tirumala sends her a gift, as for a birthday.

On Panchami Theertham the goddess's image is dipped in the tank.

❌ Myth. It is the Sudarshana disc, held to embody Venkateswara himself, that goes into the tank; the goddess is bathed alongside it beforehand.

Legend says Srinivasa's wedding to Padmavati was paid for on credit.

✅ True. Srinivasa borrowed a vast sum from Kubera, and devotees believe offerings at Tirumala still help repay that debt.

Where to celebrate

Tirumala

Padmavathi's own nine-day Brahmotsavam at Tiruchanur, 5 km from Tirupati: vahana processions twice a day, then Panchami Teertham, the holy bath in the temple tank.

Whose festival this is

Padmavathi, 'born of the lotus', is the form of Lakshmi worshipped at Tiruchanur, also called Alamelu Mangapuram after her popular name, Alamelu Manga. Tradition holds that pilgrims should see her before climbing to Venkateswara at Tirumala. The Brahmotsavam ends on the day she is said to have risen from a golden lotus in the temple tank, Padma Sarovaram, on the fifth day of the bright half of Karthika. That is why the last day is called Panchami Theertham, and why the Tirumala temple sends her a gift that morning.

The liturgy and the order of vahanas follow the Srivari Brahmotsavam at Tirumala, but on a smaller scale.

Vahana schedule

The order of vahanas in TTD's schedule for the previous Karthika Brahmotsavam, one morning and one evening procession a day, round the four Mada streets. Morning processions ran about 08:00-10:00, evening ones about 19:00-21:00. The number of days can change from year to year, so check which vahana falls on which date in TTD's dated schedule on its news site.

Panchami Theertham, the last morning

In the morning the Sare, a gift of a sari, turmeric and kumkum from the Tirumala temple, arrives in procession, coming down from the hills via Alipiri. In a mandapam facing Padma Sarovaram the priests perform Snapana Tirumanjanam, a ritual bath with milk, honey, turmeric and coconut water, for the processional image of Padmavathi and for the Sudarshana Chakra, Vishnu's discus. Then, around noon, the Chakra is dipped in the tank (TTD reports give times from about 11:45 to 12:20), and devotees bathe with it. TTD counts the bathers in lakhs, hundreds of thousands, and this is the most crowded morning of the festival. Its grace is said to last the whole day.

Planning a visit

  • The processions are free — No ticket is needed to watch the vahanas on the Mada streets. Darshan and seva tickets for the temple are sold only on TTD's portal, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in.
  • Choose your evening — The Gaja Vahanam and Garuda Vahanam evenings and the Rathotsavam morning near the end are the high points; other days are calmer and good for seeing a vahana up close.
  • Stay in Tirupati — Book a room in Tirupati about a month ahead, and the train at the same time. Tiruchanur is a short auto or bus ride from town; see where to stay in Tirupati.
  • Crowds on Panchami Theertham — TTD sets up queue lines, barricades, holding points and LED screens for the last day. Follow the queues and police directions; the UK Foreign Office notes that stampedes have occurred at large religious gatherings in India.
  • Temple dress — For what to wear inside the temple, see the Tirumala temple dress code.
