Chithirai Thiruvizha: Madurai marries its goddess and waits for her brother
A city marries off its goddess while her brother rides in late on a golden horse
The Chithirai festival (Chithirai Thiruvizha) is Madurai's great temple festival in the Tamil month of Chithirai, mid-April to mid-May. It joins two stories: at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple the goddess Meenakshi is crowned and married to Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva, and on the full moon her brother Kallazhagar, Vishnu of the Alagar hills, rides into the Vaigai river at dawn. Dates: 8–23 April 2027 (expected).

The legend
🔥
In the Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam, a three-year-old girl with three breasts steps out of the sacrificial fire of the Pandya king Malayadhvaja. She is Meenakshi.
⚔️
Meenakshi grows up a warrior, becomes queen of Madurai and conquers the whole world. Last of all she marches on Kailash, the home of Shiva.
💘
On the battlefield she sees Shiva, and her third breast vanishes: Meenakshi knows her bridegroom. Shiva comes to Madurai as Sundareswarar.
🐎
Her brother Kallazhagar, Vishnu of the Alagar hills, is late for the wedding. At the Vaigai he hands over his gifts and turns home, never entering the city.
So every Chithirai Madurai celebrates both stories: first Meenakshi's wedding, then, at the full moon, Kallazhagar's arrival at the river.
Meaning
Shiva and Vishnu
A Shaiva temple marries off its goddess and a Vaishnava god rides in for the wedding. The two festivals were joined on purpose, to bring the traditions together.
The Pandyas
Meenakshi is the clan goddess of the Pandya kings. On her wedding day she wears a garland of neem flowers, a link to the dynasty.
Thenur
The older legend is different: Alagar entered the Vaigai at the village of Thenur to free the sage Manduka, cursed to live as a frog.
Customs
Coronation
On the eighth day Meenakshi is crowned. She once handed her sceptre to the king and took it back next morning: the city is hers. Now the temple trustee receives it.
Thirukalyanam
The wedding is held on the morning of the tenth day. At that hour many married women in the temple replace their thali, the wedding pendant, with a new one.
Wedding feast
On the wedding day a shared feast is laid at the Sethupathi school, feeding tens of thousands of guests from morning until 3 pm.
Chariots
The morning after the wedding Meenakshi and Sundareswarar ride out to their subjects on chariots, hauled by thousands along the Masi streets.
Ethir Sevai
The city goes out to meet Kallazhagar at Moondrumavadi. The god travels disguised as a forest robber, in a turban, kadukkan earrings and black robes.
Into the Vaigai
At dawn on the full moon Kallazhagar rides into the Vaigai on a golden horse vahana, and Veeraraghava Perumal receives him on a silver one.

True or myth
Kallazhagar enters the river in green silk every year.
❌ Myth. The chief priest pulls a robe from a chest with his eyes shut, and its colour foretells the year: green means plenty, yellow happy events.
Meenakshi's wedding used to fall in another month.
✅ True. It used to be held in Masi (February–March), as the Masi streets recall. Tirumala Nayak moved it to Chithirai, because Masi was harvest time for farmers.
In a single night Kallazhagar appears in ten forms.
✅ True. Having freed the sage Manduka, he appears that night at the Ramarayar mandapam in all ten avatars of Vishnu, and at dawn as Mohini.

Madurai
Worth the trip
Madurai's month of temple theatre: Meenakshi is crowned and married, chariots roll round the Masi streets, and on the Chithirai full moon Kallazhagar rides into the Vaigai at dawn.
Two festivals made into one
Historically there were two festivals. The Shaiva festival of Meenakshi's wedding was held in the month of Masi (February–March), which is why the streets around the temple are still called the Masi streets, while the Vaishnava festival of Alagar was held in Chithirai, when he entered the Vaigai at the village of Thenur. In the 17th century the Nayak ruler Tirumala Nayak merged them into one festival in Chithirai, to bring the two traditions together; by tradition he also moved the wedding because Masi was harvest time for farmers.
The legends now fit together. In the Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam a three-year-old girl steps out of the sacrificial fire of the Pandya king Malayadhvaja: this is Meenakshi, the "fish-eyed" goddess, who grows up a warrior, becomes queen of Madurai and marches on Kailash, where she meets Shiva and knows him as her bridegroom. Her brother Kallazhagar sets out from the Alagar hills for the wedding but arrives late. At the Vaigai he hands over his gifts and turns back home, never entering the city.
The festival, step by step
Counted from the flag-hoisting at the Meenakshi temple. The temple releases its day list two to three weeks before the flag goes up, and the Alagar Kovil administration releases its own about four weeks ahead.
Day 1: the flag (Kodi Yetram)
The chief priest hoists the flag on the temple flagstaff, about twelve days before the full moon. For the first nine evenings the deities go round the four Masi streets on a different vahana, the carved mount that carries them, each night.
Day 8: the coronation (Pattabhishekam)
Meenakshi is crowned queen of Madurai and holds the sengol, the sceptre of righteous rule; today the temple trustee receives it from her. Her conquest of the world (Digvijayam) follows.
Day 10: the wedding (Thirukalyanam)
The divine wedding takes place inside the temple in the morning, three days before the full moon. At that hour many married women in the temple replace their thali, the wedding pendant, with a new one. A wedding feast is laid for tens of thousands of guests.
Day 11: the chariots
The morning after the wedding Meenakshi and Sundareswarar ride out to their subjects on chariots, hauled by thousands round the Masi streets.
Eve of the full moon: Ethir Sevai
The city goes out to meet Kallazhagar at Moondrumavadi. He travels disguised as a forest robber (a Kallar), in a turban, kadukkan earrings and dark robes, and spends the night at the Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple in Thallakulam.
Full moon dawn: into the Vaigai
On Chitra Pournami Kallazhagar rides into the Vaigai at Alwarpuram, by the AV bridge, on a golden horse vahana, and Veeraraghava Perumal receives him on a silver one.
The night after: ten avatars
At the Ramarayar Mandapam on the north bank Kallazhagar appears through one night as the ten avatars of Vishnu (the Dasavatharam) and then sets off back to the Alagar hills.
What you can see for free
Most of the festival happens in the streets and on the riverbank, with no ticket.
The Masi streets
The evening processions on days 1 to 9 and the chariots on day 11. The streets close to vehicles on procession days.
Inside the temple on the wedding day
Seats at the wedding are allotted by an online lottery opened in the days after the flag goes up; there is also a free darshan queue, first come, first served.
Moondrumavadi to Thallakulam
The Ethir Sevai, the city's welcome to Kallazhagar, on the morning before the full moon.
The Vaigai banks near Alwarpuram
For the river entry at dawn. The festival schedule advises being in place by about 4 am.
Crowds and safety
Tamil Nadu Tourism puts attendance at around a million people. In 2022 a crush on the Vaigai bank during Kallazhagar's river entry killed two people and injured seven.
Follow the authorities — FCDO notes that stampedes have happened at large religious gatherings in India and advises following local authorities. On the river day the AV and Yanaikkal bridges close to vehicles and parking is set aside away from the river: plan to walk the last stretch. In an emergency call 112.
Heat — April and May are hot in Madurai. Along the routes people hand out neer mor, spiced buttermilk, and panakam, jaggery water with ginger and cardamom; carry your own water as well.
When to arrive and where to stay
Plan for the wedding week, not the whole month.
Book about two months ahead
Book a room for the nights from the eve of the wedding to the full moon; April and May are also the summer holidays. Take trains and flights as soon as the 60-day booking window opens. A room within walking distance of the temple avoids the street closures.
Four or five nights
Arrive by the evening before the wedding. Four nights cover the wedding, the chariots, the Ethir Sevai and the river entry; a fifth avoids leaving into the dispersing crowd.
