In Delhi, Lohri is a courtyard and rooftop festival held inside residential colonies rather than a public spectacle with a programme to attend.

Where to watch

Colony grounds and rooftops: the real Lohri, bonfires organised by residents' associations. By invitation only: these are not public grounds and there is no listing to consult.

🎟 Free viewing

  • There is no public vantage point for Lohri in Delhi: the fires are inside colonies and on private rooftops
  • Markets selling rewari, gajak and groundnuts in the days before, the one part of Lohri that happens in public

🗓 Programme

Colony bonfires

Bonfires lit in residential colonies, on rooftops and in housing society grounds, usually organised by residents' associations. Sesame, jaggery, rewari, gajak, peanuts and popcorn go into the fire and round the circle; folk songs and dancing follow.

Residential colonies and housing societies across the city; Greater Kailash and Hauz Khas are often mentioned

Restaurant and club evenings

The commercial layer: restaurants, clubs, hotels and farmhouses across the city sell ticketed Lohri evenings with a bonfire, bhangra and a menu.

Makar Sankranti in Delhi

Makar Sankranti follows the Lohri night. For Delhi, Makar Sankranti 2027 falls on Friday 15 January 2027 by the panchang, with the Sankranti moment at 21:14 on 14 January 2027, punya kaal 07:15–17:46 and maha punya kaal 07:15–09:00, because a Sankranti moment after sunset carries the observance to the next sunrise.
