Buddha Purnima in Delhi
The triple miracle of a single full moon
Delhi keeps Buddha Purnima quietly in a ridge-forest park: prayers under a Bodhi tree grown from a Sri Lankan sapling, beside a gilded Buddha dedicated by the Dalai Lama in 1993.
Where to watch
Buddha Jayanti Smarak Park: the main public observance, with prayers under the Bodhi tree planted by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1964 from a Sri Lankan sapling, and the gilded Buddha on its island pavilion, dedicated by the Dalai Lama in 1993. Upper Ridge Road (Vande Mataram Marg), on the central Ridge.
Majnu-ka-Tilla: the Tibetan colony by the Yamuna, with its monastery and prayer wheels. North Delhi, near Vidhan Sabha metro station.
The Buddha relics of the National Museum: relics from Piprahwa (ancient Kapilavastu) that travel for expositions: in May 2026 they were in Ladakh for Buddha Purnima. Check where they are before planning around them.
