Buddha Purnima: what it is and where to spend it in India
The triple miracle of a single full moon
Buddha Purnima, also called Buddha Jayanti or Vesak, is the full moon of the month of Vaishakha, which Buddhist tradition holds to be the day of the Buddha's birth, his awakening and his passing. In 2027 it falls on Thursday 20 May, a central government holiday. It is a quiet festival: white clothes, flowers, lamps and chanting in monasteries rather than street crowds, and the places to feel it are the ones tied to the Buddha's own life, above all Sarnath near Varanasi.
Birth, Enlightenment & Parinirvana of the Buddha
Vaishakha Purnima, the full moon of Vaishakha. The central government's holiday list for the year, issued around July of the year before, confirms the day.
The legend
Buddhist tradition tells that Queen Maya gave birth to Prince Siddhartha in the Lumbini grove, on the full moon of Vaishakha.
Years later, after harsh austerities, Siddhartha accepts milk-rice from a young woman, Sujata, and sits to meditate beneath a tree at Bodh Gaya.
On the full moon of that same month he awakens and becomes the Buddha, the awakened one.
He gives his first sermon in the Deer Park at Sarnath, and 45 years later, on the same full moon, enters parinirvana at Kushinagar.
So a single full moon holds all three: the Buddha's birth, awakening and passing.
Meaning

❌ Myth. Today's tree is held to be its descendant, and the spot has been revered for over two thousand years.
✅ True. Since 2000, Vesak has been observed at UN headquarters and offices.
Where to celebrate
Delhi
Delhi keeps Buddha Purnima quietly in a ridge-forest park: prayers under a Bodhi tree grown from a Sri Lankan sapling, beside a gilded Buddha dedicated by the Dalai Lama in 1993.
Rishikesh
In Rishikesh the Vaishakha full moon is above all a Ganga bath: from sunrise the ghats fill with bathers, while the Buddhist side of the day stays small and quiet.
Varanasi
The relics kept under the Buddha at Mulagandha Kuti Vihar leave the temple twice a year, and Buddha Purnima is one of the two days.
What you see on the day
Buddha Purnima has no parade and no fireworks. It happens indoors and in temple courtyards, and it starts early: by sunrise monasteries are chanting, Buddha images have been washed and hung with flowers, and devotees in plain white are settling in for a whole day at the temple. Visitors are welcome to sit at the back, take part in bathing the small Buddha figure, and eat what the temple serves; the food is vegetarian and offered to everyone.
The character of the day changes with the place. At Sarnath it is a public festival with a morning relic darshan (viewing) and an afternoon procession; in Delhi it is a quiet gathering under a Bodhi tree in a forest park; at Bodh Gaya pilgrims from half of Asia spend the night under the tree. In the evening lamps are lit in temple courtyards, and the full moon rises over the stupas to the sound of chanting.
Where to spend Buddha Purnima
Three very different days, from a relic darshan to a Ganga bath.
Sarnath, near Varanasi
The strongest reason to plan a trip around the date. The relics enshrined at Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, the Maha Bodhi Society temple of 1931, leave the temple twice a year, and Buddha Purnima is one of those days: they are shown in the morning only (in 2026 from about 6:00 to 11:00). In the late afternoon a Dhamma Yatra walks from Kachahri in Varanasi to Sarnath, and the Thai, Tibetan, Burmese, Japanese, Sri Lankan and Chinese temples along the monastery road each keep their own observances. In 2026 more than a lakh (100,000) people came. Sarnath is about 10 km from Varanasi, 25–45 minutes by road; the excavated site and the museum need ASI tickets, the temple does not.
Delhi
A quiet day in a ridge-forest park. Buddha Jayanti Park on Upper Ridge Road holds prayers under a Bodhi tree planted in 1964 from a Sri Lankan sapling, beside a gilded Buddha on an island pavilion dedicated by the Dalai Lama in 1993; the Tibetan colony of Majnu-ka-Tilla keeps the day at its monastery. Come on the day itself, early or towards sunset, because May in Delhi is fiercely hot. Details: [Buddha Purnima in Delhi](/en/festivals/buddha-jayanti/delhi/).
Rishikesh
Here the Vaishakha full moon is above all a Ganga bath: from sunrise Triveni Ghat and the ghats up to Laxman Jhula fill with bathers, and the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan closes the day. The Buddhist side is small; some ashrams and meditation centres hold a full-moon sitting, and the nearest large monastery is Mindrolling in Dehradun, about 50 km away.
Bodh Gaya
The place of the awakening itself. Pilgrims from Tibet, Sri Lanka, Japan, Thailand and the West gather at the Mahabodhi temple, and under the Bodhi tree, held to descend from the original, people chant, meditate and prostrate through the night. The town overflows: book rooms far in advance and come to the tree at sunrise, when the queues are shortest.
✅ Etiquette in temples and monasteries
Visitors are welcome on Buddha Purnima; a few habits keep you on the right side of the day.
- Clockwise — Walk around stupas and shrines clockwise, and do not turn your back to a Buddha image when posing for photos.
- Shoes and clothes — Shoes come off at temple doors, Mulagandha Kuti Vihar included. Plain, covered clothes fit the day; white is what devotees wear.
- Quiet — Keep your voice down around people meditating. Even an hour of silence or sitting yourself is in the spirit of the day.
- Vegetarian — Expect vegetarian food everywhere around temples on this day, and do not bring meat or alcohol into temple grounds.
👣 Planning and booking
Buddha Purnima is a gazetted holiday in the middle of the May travel season, so trains go first.
- Sarnath: check the relics first
Before fixing the dates, check that the relics will be at home: in May 2025 one of them was in Vietnam for the UN Vesak celebrations, and there was no Buddha Purnima showing at Sarnath that year. Then book trains or flights to Varanasi about six weeks ahead and rooms a month ahead. Arrive the day before: the ASI site and the museum (closed on Fridays) are easier then, and the festival day starts at dawn.
- Rishikesh: a month ahead
May is Char Dham season, Rishikesh is the gateway town and summer weekends bring heavy traffic from Delhi. Book about a month ahead and arrive the evening before to be on the ghats at sunrise.
- Delhi: no rush for rooms
The festival does not move Delhi's hotel market, but book trains out of Delhi about a month ahead.
