Lakshmi temples in Delhi
लक्ष्मी
The Lakshmi temple people look for in Delhi is the Laxminarayan Temple, better known as Birla Mandir, on Mandir Marg west of Connaught Place. Lakshmi shares its main shrine with Narayana (Vishnu), as the couple Lakshmi-Narayana. Entry is free, and Delhi Tourism gives the hours as 4:30–13:30 and 14:30–21:00. The second place on the list, Akshardham, is a Swaminarayan temple, not a Lakshmi temple; it keeps a Lakshmi-Narayana image among others. For the city's other temples, see the [Delhi temples page](/en/delhi/temples/).
Lakshmi
Goddess of prosperity, beauty and good fortune, wife of Vishnu. Her image hangs in every shop, next to Ganesha.
Why Lakshmi stands beside Narayana
Lakshmi is the goddess of prosperity, beauty and good fortune. By the story she rose from the ocean of milk when gods and demons churned it, and chose Vishnu; ever since, the two are worshipped as one pair, Lakshmi-Narayana, and a temple named Laxminarayan is a temple to both. More about her: Lakshmi.
Where to find her
Laxminarayan Temple (Birla Mandir)
Built in 1933–1939 by Baldeo Das Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla, in cream and ochre-red stone, with the statues of Narayana and Lakshmi in the main shrine. Gandhi inaugurated it on condition that people of every caste could enter. The 7.5-acre grounds have gardens, fountains and side shrines (Durga is in the tower to the left of the main one). Phones and cameras are not allowed inside; shoes come off at the entrance. More: Laxminarayan Temple.
Akshardham: a Lakshmi-Narayana image in a Swaminarayan temple
A temple to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, opened in 2005, where Lakshmi-Narayana stands among the images alongside Sita-Rama, Radha-Krishna and Shiva-Parvati. She is one presence among many here rather than the reason to come. Closed on Mondays; entry is free, the exhibitions are ticketed. More: Akshardham.
Diwali: Lakshmi's night
Lakshmi's great night is Diwali, on 8 November 2026, inside a festival week of 6–11 November (in 2027, 29 October). Houses are cleaned and lit to welcome her on the night of Lakshmi Puja. Birla Mandir draws large crowds at Diwali, as it does at Janmashtami, so come early in the day or expect a queue. See Diwali.
