Saraswati: the goddess of knowledge, music and speech

सरस्वती

Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts: a woman in white on a white lotus, playing the veena, with a swan at her feet. She began as a river in the Rigveda and became the voice of learning itself, which is why a book in India is still treated as a small piece of her. Students pray to her before exams, musicians before a concert, and on Vasant Panchami children write their first letters in her name.

Story

In the north and east, on Vasant Panchami children are taught their first letters in her name, and books are placed before her image. The river Saraswati that once flowed beside the Indus is said to run underground and join the Ganga at Prayag.

Who Saraswati is

In the Vedas Saraswati is a river and the goddess of that river, purifying and life-giving. In later Vedic texts she merges with Vac, the goddess of speech, and from then on her domain is the word: language, poetry, music, learning, the arts and sciences. Tradition credits her with the invention of Sanskrit. Her other names follow the same thread: Sharada, "the giver of knowledge", Vagdevi and Vani, "speech".

With Lakshmi and Parvati she forms the Tridevi, the three chief goddesses. Most traditions make her the consort of [Brahma](/en/deities/brahma/), the creator, and his creative power; some Puranas call her his mind-born daughter, others a virgin goddess with no consort at all, and many devotees worship her simply as herself. She is honoured in Jainism and Buddhism too, and in Bali her day is a public celebration.

The river did not vanish from memory. Tradition holds that the Saraswati, which once flowed near the Indus, went underground and joins the Ganga and the Yamuna unseen at the Sangam in Prayagraj.

✅ Symbols and iconography

White runs through all of it: dress, flowers, lotus and swan stand for sattva, clarity and purity.

  • Veena — The long-necked string instrument in two of her hands: all the creative arts, and knowledge expressed in harmony.
  • Book — A palm-leaf manuscript, the Vedas and all learning.
  • Mala and water pot — Crystal prayer beads for meditation; the pot for the purifying power that separates the essential from the inessential.
  • Swan — Her mount, the hamsa, which in legend can drink the milk out of milk mixed with water: discernment, truth from untruth. Hence her name Hamsavahini.
  • Peacock — Sometimes beside her: splendour, dance, and the power to turn poison into beauty.

Stories

The best-loved one is in the Ramayana. The demon Kumbhakarna does penance to win a boon, and the gods are afraid he will ask to be invincible. Saraswati confuses his tongue, and the words that come out ask for endless sleep instead. The story is often read as a reminder that speech belongs to her, even in the mouth of a demon.

In the Devi Mahatmya, Maha Saraswati, an eight-armed form of the goddess, is praised as the one who destroyed the demon Shumbha and his army. In the Padma Purana she becomes a river to carry a world-consuming fire, the Vadavagni, to the western ocean, pausing at Pushkar on the way.

The Devi Bhagavata Purana tells how Saraswati, Lakshmi and Ganga were once all wives of Vishnu, until a quarrel between them ended in curses: Ganga and Saraswati cursed each other to become rivers on earth. Vishnu then decreed that Saraswati would live in three forms: one part with him, one as a river and one as the consort of Brahma.

How Saraswati is worshipped

Her great day is Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of the bright half of Magha, in late January or February. In Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Bihar and Jharkhand it is Saraswati Puja: clay images in pandals and school halls, students placing their books and pens before her, prasad of boondi, carrots and ber fruit, and immersion of the image a day later. In the north the colour of the day is yellow, for the mustard fields. Children aged four or five are often given their first lesson in letters.

In Kerala and Tamil Nadu the same role falls to the last three days of [Navratri](/en/festivals/navratri/). Books and instruments are laid before the goddess on the eighth day and taken up again on Vijayadashami, when small children are taught to write their first letters with a finger in a plate of rice.

Every day, the respect is simpler. A book is never put on the floor or touched with the foot; if you drop one, touch it with your right hand and then your forehead. The short mantra is Om aim Saraswatyai namah.

Saraswati temples you can visit

She is worshipped in every school and music room, so her own temples are fewer than you might expect, and most are in the south.

Basar, Telangana

The Gnana Saraswati temple on the Godavari, about 205 km from Hyderabad, where families bring children for Akshara Abhyasam, the first writing of letters, before they start school. Worship begins at 4 am.

Karnataka and Kerala

Sringeri Sharadamba in Karnataka; Mookambika at Kollur; in Kerala, Panachikkadu, Avanamcode and Dakshina Mookambika at North Paravur.

Tamil Nadu and the north

Koothanur in Tamil Nadu; Maa Sharda at Maihar in Madhya Pradesh; and at Pushkar, the Savitri temple on Ratnagiri hill, linked to her through Brahma's legend.

Sharada Peeth

The ancient temple-university of Sharada, Kashmir's name for Saraswati, now a ruin in the Neelum valley in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, 10 km from the Line of Control. For Kashmiri Pandits it remains one of the three holiest places.

Festivals

Vasant Panchami in January or February is her festival across the north and east. In the south she is honoured at the end of [Navratri](/en/festivals/navratri/), and Vijayadashami, the day of [Dussehra](/en/festivals/dussehra/), is the traditional day to begin learning anything new, from the alphabet to music.
