Trees of Dehradun

← Dehradun

Sal

Dehradun is the headquarters of Indian forestry (the Forest Research Institute and the Wildlife Institute of India are both here), and the Doon valley's sal forest is the stand on which a century of Indian forest science was worked out.

Shorea robusta

Litchi

Dehradun litchi is a registered geographical indication, tied to the Doon valley's particular soil and climate; the orchards are the reason the valley smells of fruit in May.

Litchi chinensis

Burans (tree rhododendron)

The state tree of Uttarakhand. The petals are pressed into a sharp pink juice sold along hill roads in spring, and the flowering is the local marker that winter is over.

Rhododendron arboreum

Bougainvillea

Not native to India, but so thoroughly adopted into Indian landscaping that it has become part of the look of planned cities and hill stations.

Bougainvillea glabra

Lantana

Introduced as a garden plant in the nineteenth century, lantana now covers a large share of India's dry and moist deciduous forest and crowds out the grasses that deer and cattle graze. Forest departments across the Himalayan foothills run clearance programmes against it, and some craft cooperatives weave furniture from the cut stems.
