लीची (lychee)

IUCN LC · Least concern

A dense dark evergreen orchard tree carrying bunches of rough red fruit for a few weeks at the start of summer.

How to recognise it

Glossy compound leaves and a rounded crown; in May and June the fruit hangs in scarlet clusters and the orchards are netted against birds.

Where to see it

Dehradun

Dehradun litchi is a registered geographical indication, tied to the Doon valley's particular soil and climate; the orchards are the reason the valley smells of fruit in May.
