Animals in Dehradun

← Dehradun

Asian elephant

Ganesha's animal, and the reason the corridors between Rajaji and Corbett are legally protected: the herds have used them for far longer than the roads have existed.

Elephas maximus

Indian leopard

Wildlife Institute of India researchers link the growth of Rajaji's leopard population partly to the long absence of tigers, which returned to the western Motichur range only in December 2020; on one winter survey day they saw leopards 11 times.

Panthera pardus fusca

Chital (spotted deer)

Western Rajaji, the larger part of the park west of the Ganga, towards Dehradun, is exceptionally rich in prey: a Wildlife Institute of India survey in the mid-2000s estimated about 110 wild ungulates per square kilometre there, with chital the most numerous.

Rhesus macaque

Fed at Hanuman temples, which is why troops concentrate around them. Feeding is what makes the animals bold, so the temples that discourage it have calmer monkeys.
