Mathura or Agra: Krishna's town or the Taj Mahal
Agra or Mathura depends on what you came to India for. Agra is the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the 'Baby Taj', the Mughal city on the Yamuna. Mathura, upstream on the same river, is Krishna's birthplace and the heart of the Braj pilgrimage country. They share a railway line and a climate, and express trains link them in 40–60 minutes, so many trips include both.
Mathura
On the banks of the Yamuna, the birthplace of Krishna: a warren of temples, ghats and bell-bright lanes that erupt into colour at Holi. The devotional heart of the Braj country, and one of India's most joyful Holi celebrations.
📅 Best time: Oct–Mar
Agra
Marble and red sandstone on one bend of the Yamuna: the Taj Mahal at dawn, the fort where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking at it, and the 'Baby Taj' whose inlay work the Taj borrowed. Most visitors leave by sunset; the old city's bazaars and petha shops reward those who stay.

Open in India GOMughal marble or Krishna's Braj: who each city suits
Agra suits a trip about Mughal architecture: the Taj Mahal, which the guide puts at about 6.9 million visitors a year, Agra Fort and the 'Baby Taj'. The guide counts three UNESCO sites, and Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned Mughal capital, lies on the road towards Jaipur. Most visitors leave by sunset; petha, candied ash gourd sold by the box near the Taj, is the sweet people take home.
Mathura suits pilgrimage and festivals: the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, honoured as Krishna's birthplace, Dwarkadhish temple and the ghats on the Yamuna. Its peda, a dense milk fudge often handed out as prasadam, is the local sweet. Vrindavan is 12 km away, and most visitors combine the two. See the Mathura page.
Getting between Mathura and Agra
Approximate fares, checked in August 2026. More on the Agra to Mathura route page.
Train
The Delhi expresses run on to Agra: 40–60 minutes, from ~₹90. Mathura Junction stands 3–4 km from the temples (e-rickshaw ~₹100–150), and fast-train tickets open 60 days ahead on IRCTC.
Taxi to Vrindavan
From Agra to Vrindavan by taxi or Uber Intercity it is about 70 km, 1.5–2 hours, ~₹1,200–1,800. Intercity app rides work far more reliably than app cabs inside Mathura.
Seasons: the same calendar, different crowds
Both cities have the same best months, February, March, October and November, and both are best avoided in May and June, when average daytime highs reach 40–42°C. In Agra, dawn fog in December and January can hide the Taj at sunrise, and in 2023 floodwater reached its walls.
What differs is the crowd. Agra's busiest hours are daily: the Taj opens at sunrise and the crowds arrive by nine. Mathura's peaks are the festivals: on Holi (next on 22–23 March 2027) and on Janmashtami (25 August 2027) the lanes fill from dawn, and on Janmashtami vehicles are stopped about 3 km from Janmabhoomi. See Holi in Mathura.
Friday in Agra
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, and the Gatimaan Express from Delhi does not run that day. If Agra and Mathura are on one trip, give Friday to Mathura.
Getting around and what it costs
Fares are approximate, checked in August 2026.
Agra
The metro, opened in 2024, has six stations along Taj East Gate, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the old city, ~₹10–20. Uber and Ola work, but there are few cars at dawn and near the monuments. Hiring one tuk-tuk for the day, ~₹800–1,500, saves haggling at every stop; agree the price first.
Mathura
E-rickshaws run the city: shared ones ~₹10–30 a seat, ~₹100–150 for the whole vehicle. Autos ~₹20–30 a seat. Name the district, not the temple, or drivers at the station quote two or three times the fare.
