Delhi or Mumbai: India's history or its present tense
Delhi vs Mumbai is history against the present tense. Delhi has the monuments: eight capitals on one plain, three UNESCO sites and the start of most North India routes. Mumbai is modern India at full volume, with Art Deco seafronts, Bollywood and street food on every corner. Their seasons only partly overlap: February suits both, while Mumbai's monsoon and Delhi's May heat rule out different months.
Delhi
Eight capitals stacked on one plain, and you can walk between them: a 12th-century victory tower, the Mughal tomb that taught the Taj its shape, colonial New Delhi's avenues, and the spice lanes of Chandni Chowk. Most trips to North India start here. Give it two days and it stops being just an airport.

Mumbai
Modern India at full volume: Art Deco seafronts, colonial Gothic, Bollywood, and street food and nightlife on every corner. Sunset promenades, island temples and markets that never sleep, in the city that shows you where India is heading.

Open in India GOPast or present: who each city suits
Delhi suits a trip built around monuments and history: eight capitals stacked on one plain, a 12th-century victory tower, the Mughal tomb that taught the Taj its shape, colonial New Delhi's avenues and the spice lanes of Chandni Chowk. The guide counts three UNESCO sites. Most trips to North India start here. From here the fast trains reach Agra in about 1 h 40 min. See the Delhi page.
Mumbai suits a trip about the city itself: sunset promenades on Marine Drive, the Gateway of India, colonial Gothic (CSMT station is a UNESCO site and a working terminus at once), island temples, markets that never sleep and an industry that makes 650+ Hindi films a year. It is also the way to the coast: the Vande Bharat to Goa takes about 7 h 45 min, and Pune is about 2 h 20 min away.
Seasons: different months to avoid
Delhi's good season is the cool, dry half of the year, with October, February and March at the top. The hot months are May and June: average highs of 39–40°C and heatwaves above 45°C. From November to January smog can push the AQI past 450 and fog delays trains and flights. Its monsoon is modest next to Mumbai's: about 196 mm in July and 227 mm in August.
Mumbai's best months are November to February. May to September are marked to avoid: around 2,200 mm of rain falls in the monsoon, July alone brings about 920 mm, and red alerts disrupt trains and flights.
Both in one trip: February is among the best months in both. October and March also work if you accept a less-than-best month in one of them; November to January is Mumbai's best season and Delhi's smog season.
