Mumbai to Delhi: the Rajdhani overnight or a flight
~16 h
Between Mumbai and Delhi the choice is a night on the Rajdhani or a flight. Both daily Rajdhani Express trains leave Mumbai Central around 17:00 and arrive the next morning, after 15.5 to 16.5 hours. Flying is far quicker in the air, but both cities now have two airports, so check the code on the ticket before you plan the ride to and from them.

Open in India GOBy train: two Rajdhanis
Mumbai has several termini (CSMT, Mumbai Central, Dadar, LTT, Bandra Terminus); the two Rajdhanis below leave from Mumbai Central daily. Both are listed in NTES as Tejas Rajdhani and have AC classes only (1A, 2A, 3A). Times are from the official NTES timetable, checked in October 2026:
- 12951 Mumbai Central – New Delhi Rajdhani (12952 in the other direction): Mumbai Central 17:00, New Delhi (NDLS) 08:32, about 15 h 30 min. New Delhi station is on the Airport Express and Yellow metro lines.
- 12953 August Kranti Rajdhani (12954 back): Mumbai Central 17:10, Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) 09:43, about 16 h 30 min. It also stops at Mathura Junction (07:53), handy for Vrindavan, and NZM is the station for the fast trains to Agra.
Timetables change, so check current fares and times on IRCTC, where tickets open 60 days ahead.
By air: which airport at each end
In Mumbai there are two airports, about an hour apart by road. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (BOM) in Santacruz has two terminals some five kilometres apart; from T2 the Aqua metro line runs to BKC and Cuffe Parade for ~₹10–80. Navi Mumbai (NMI), in Ulwe, opened for domestic flights in December 2025 (our data, August 2026); it is about 40 km from South Mumbai across the Atal Setu bridge, a 50–110 minute taxi ride for ~₹1,200–1,800 including the ~₹250 toll, and has no metro yet.
In Delhi, Indira Gandhi International (DEL) has two terminals that matter: T3 for international and part of the domestic traffic, T1 for the low-cost carriers. From T3 the Airport Express reaches New Delhi station in twenty minutes for ~₹65; a prepaid taxi is ~₹500–900, an Uber or Ola ~₹400–700 (prices approx., August 2026). Since June 2026 domestic flights also use Noida International (DXN) at Jewar, on the Yamuna Expressway.
✅ Good to know
- Getting to Mumbai Central by local train. Suburban tickets now come from the RailOne app or the station window; the old UTS app was switched off in March 2026, and you cannot buy on board.
- Women-only coaches. Mumbai locals and the Delhi metro both have them; in the Delhi metro it is the first coach in the direction of travel.
- Taxis in Delhi. A cab hailed off the street asks 3–10 times the fair price. Use an app or the prepaid counter, which is paid at the end of the ride.
- Early flights from Delhi. The Airport Express starts at 04:45 and the metro stops around 23:30, so a very early flight means a taxi.
