Bangalore or Kochi: a plateau city or Kerala's old harbour
Kochi vs Bangalore is a choice between a harbour and a plateau. Kochi is Kerala's old seafaring crossroads: Fort Kochi's Chinese fishing nets, the synagogue and Jew Town, spice markets and the way into the backwaters. Bengaluru (Bangalore) is a big, mild city at about 900 m. They are close enough to combine: a Vande Bharat covers the distance in about 8 h 40 min, and night trains and buses take 10–12 hours.
Bengaluru
India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

Kochi
Kerala's seafaring crossroads, where Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish traders met: old Fort Kochi with its Chinese fishing nets, the synagogue and Jew Town, spice markets, antiques and evening Kathakali performances. The gateway to Kerala's famous backwaters, too.

Open in India GOHarbour or plateau: who each city suits
Kochi suits a trip about the sea and layered history: Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish traders all left a mark, and the Paradesi Synagogue dates from 1568. Evenings bring Kathakali performances, and the backwaters start here. Getting around is half on water: the Water Metro to Fort Kochi takes about 20 minutes for ₹40, and the old state ferry crosses the same harbour for ₹6 (fares as of August 2026).
Bengaluru is where the guide's Malabar route starts, with two nights before the road to the coast; Kochi gets three. At 923 m the city never gets truly hot. Its own sights are a rock-cut cave temple, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle and the market lanes of Gandhi Bazaar, and breakfast is benne masala dosa, the Karnataka version cooked in butter. See the Bengaluru page.
Seasons: Kerala's monsoon is the dividing line
Kochi's season is December to February. May to August are marked to avoid: June alone brings close to 600 mm of rain over 23 days, and heavy rain interrupts the ferries and the Water Metro, so keep a land route in reserve. The north-east monsoon adds a wet tail in October and November. It is warm and humid all year, with daytime highs of 30–35°C.
Bengaluru has no month to avoid and is driest from November to February, at 27–31°C in the day. Its wettest months are September and October.
Both in one trip: December to February, when both cities are in their best window.
