Bangalore or Hyderabad: two Deccan cities, two different summers

Bangalore vs Hyderabad is a closer contest than it looks: both are big Deccan cities with a tech side and an old side. Hyderabad has the Nizams' old city with the Charminar and Golconda Fort. Bengaluru (Bangalore) sits higher, at 923 m against 530 m, and its summer highs are lower. The real difference is April to June, when Hyderabad reaches 40°C and more and Bengaluru stays in the low thirties.

Bengaluru

India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

Hyderabad

The City of Pearls blends Nizami grandeur with a booming tech scene: the Charminar and old-city bazaars on one side, glassy HITEC City on the other, and the mighty Golconda Fort above. Pearls, palaces, and one of India's great old-and-new capitals.

Old city or easy climate: who each city suits

Hyderabad suits a trip built around history and food: the Charminar (built in 1591) and the old-city bazaars, Golconda Fort above the city, the glass towers of HITEC City on the other side. The guide's food list here runs from Irani chai with Osmania biscuits to qubani ka meetha, an apricot dessert. Note that neither Charminar nor Golconda has its own metro station: take the Green Line to MGBS and finish by rickshaw.

Bengaluru suits a trip where the weather should not get in the way: no month is on its avoid list. Its older layer is a rock-cut cave temple under a hill and the market lanes of Gandhi Bazaar, and its food runs from benne masala dosa, cooked in butter, to bisi bele bath and Mysore pak. Mysuru is about two hours away by train. See the Bengaluru page.

Seasons: same winter, different summer

November to February is the best time in both cities. Hyderabad marks April to June to avoid: at 530 m on the Deccan, May averages 40°C in the day and heat peaks reach 44–45°C. From July to October it gets cloudbursts, sudden heavy downpours.

Bengaluru, at 923 m, has no month to avoid. In April and May daytime highs are about 33–34°C, and its wettest months are September and October, with heavy showers and local flooding.

If your trip falls in April–June, Bengaluru is the one without an avoid label, with highs of 30–34°C against Hyderabad's 35–40°C averages. In winter either works, and a few days in each fit easily.

Getting between Bengaluru and Hyderabad

Approximate fares and times, checked in August 2026. Details on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru route page.

Vande Bharat

Chair car between Kacheguda in Hyderabad and Yesvantpur in Bengaluru, about 8 hours, ~₹1,300–1,600.

Night sleeper buses

TGSRTC Garuda Plus, state Volvos and private sleepers, 8–10 hours, ~₹450–1,550. The route is one of the busiest in the country, with hundreds of departures a night, so a seat turns up even on the day.

Hyderabad's stations are far apart

Secunderabad Junction is the main one, Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) is closest to the old city, and Kacheguda handles southern routes. Bengaluru's three are KSR Bengaluru City by Majestic, Yeshvantpur and SMVT. Check the ticket before you plan the ride from the station.

Getting around and what it costs

Fares are approximate, checked in August 2026.

Hyderabad

Three metro lines at ~₹10–60, 6:00–23:00. Apps are strong here and Rapido is usually the cheapest. The airport (HYD) is 30 km out and the metro does not reach it: Pushpak coaches ~₹100–300, cabs ~₹600–900, 45–75 minutes.

Bengaluru

Namma Metro ~₹10–90 a ride is the one way to ignore the traffic. Autos booked through Namma Yatri, which takes no commission from drivers, start at ~₹36 for 2 km. A rented scooter (from ~₹300 a day) is fine on a quiet Sunday and hard work on a weekday.

Languages

Hyderabad's languages in the guide are Telugu, Urdu, Hindi and English. Bengaluru's are Kannada, English, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, so Telugu appears on both lists.
