Where to stay in Chandigarh

← Chandigarh

For most visitors the answer is Sector 17: the city's main hotel hub, with the plaza, markets and restaurants within walking distance. The five-stars split between the centre, the Sector 35 business district and the Elante Mall side near the airport and railway station, while the most unusual stays (a 17th-century fort, a heritage homestay, a forest spa resort) sit outside the city. The hotels are listed above; here is how to choose the area.

Which area to choose

Sector 17 and around: the centre

The best base if you want to walk: Sector 17's pedestrian plaza, the Sector 22 market across the road, cafes and cinemas, and the Rose Garden and Le Corbusier Centre close by. Here are Taj Chandigarh (Sector 17-A), Hyatt Centric, a design hotel inspired by Le Corbusier's architecture, and Hotel Shivalikview, the government-run CITCO hotel on the main plaza. Hotel Parkview, CITCO's budget hotel in Sector 24-B, is near the Rose Garden.

Sector 10: green and quiet

Hotel Mountview, CITCO's landmark hotel, sits in leafy Sector 10 against the Shivalik hills, with lawns near Leisure Valley. It is old-school and official rather than boutique, and close to the museum and the northern sectors' cafes.

Sector 35: the business district

JW Marriott is here, a five-star with reputedly the largest rooms in the city, an outdoor pool and a spa. Sector 35 also has some of the city's best-known places to eat on its doorstep (see restaurants).

Industrial Area Phase 1: near Elante, the airport and the station

Hyatt Regency is built into the Elante Mall complex, with shops, cinemas and restaurants a lift ride away. Lemon Tree (with a rooftop pool) and Hometel by Sarovar are business hotels close to the airport, the railway station and the tech park. Practical rather than scenic.

Out of town: forts, homestays and a spa

WelcomHeritage Ramgarh in Panchkula is a 17th-century Chandel Rajput fort turned heritage hotel, with its ramparts and courtyards intact, about 30–40 minutes out. Bhanu Mahal, a heritage homestay with a pool and home cooking near Sector 28 of Panchkula, suits travellers with a car. The Oberoi Sukhvilas in New Chandigarh, about 30 minutes from the centre, has villas and luxury tents by the Siswan forest and an Ayurvedic spa. Ginger in Zirakpur is the budget option from the Tata group on the southern edge.

How to decide

One or two nights, sightseeing on foot: Sector 17. Everything in the centre is walkable, and the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake and the Capitol Complex are a short ride away.

Early flight or train: the Industrial Area Phase 1 hotels, close to the airport (on the Mohali side, 12 km from Sector 17) and the railway station.

A quieter stay with a sense of the city: Mountview in Sector 10.

The stay is the point: Ramgarh fort, Bhanu Mahal or Sukhvilas, with a car.

There are no hotels in the Capitol Complex (a government quarter) or around the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake; stay in the sectors and go there for half a day. More in luxury hotels and boutique hotels.

Before you book

  • Government hotels — Chandigarh's tourism corporation, CITCO, runs Mountview, Shivalikview and Parkview: official, central and fairly priced, a safe alternative to unverified budget stock.
  • Festival weeks — Lohri, Vaisakhi and Guru Nanak Jayanti load the trains and roads into the city more than its hotels; two weeks ahead is usually enough for a room. See festivals of Chandigarh.
  • Getting around from the hotel — Between sectors you will need a cab or an auto; buses stop around 22:00. See getting around.
