Chandigarh nightlife

← Chandigarh

Chandigarh's nights run on live music and craft beer rather than big clubs: a basement pub with a band every night, a speakeasy-style cocktail room, a bar inside the Taj and several microbreweries. The list above shows the places; here is what each kind of evening looks like, what to do without a drink, and how to get back once the buses stop.

DiromaThe most spectacular, view-driven rooftop in the tricity for sunset drinks and dinner.
Lava BarThe tricity's most polished, classy cocktail-and-live-music bar for a refined evening.
PeddlersThe most iconic old-school nightlife institution in the city, with the best-loved live band in town.
The Back RoomThe best-crafted cocktails in the city paired with nightly live music in a warm, grown-up room.
BoathouseA distinctive, award-winning themed brewery that's become a modern tricity landmark near Elante.
Hops n GrainsThe tricity's most historic craft-beer address, still pouring some of the best fresh beer in the region.
The Brew EstateThe original and most iconic Chandigarh microbrewery; polished, popular and the natural first stop for the city's craft-beer scene.
The Great BearOne of the most popular rooftop breweries in the city's Sector 26 nightlife hub; reliable, safe and made for evening drinks.
Giani'sThe tricity's most consistent iconic ice-cream/kulfi parlour, and open late.
Amritsari Kulcha HubA cook-to-order kulcha specialist with a strong local following and fast turnover; clean street eating done the Punjabi way.

Where to have a drink

Bars and pubs here sit in the ₹₹₹ bracket. The list above also includes four microbreweries: The Brew Estate, Hops n Grains, Boathouse and The Great Bear.

A pub with a live band: Peddlers

In a Sector 35-C basement done up as an English tavern, Peddlers was among the first places in the city to make a live band a nightly fixture, and locals still call it the grandfather of Chandigarh pubs. The band plays seven nights a week; for weekends, book ahead.

Cocktails: The Back Room

In Sector 34-A, billed as the city's first speakeasy-style bar: fresh produce and house-made syrups in the cocktails, exposed brick and leather sofas, a live band every night.

A quiet hotel bar: Lava Bar

Inside the Taj in Sector 17-A, a multi-level retro bar with low furniture, a long list of international wines and single malts, and live bands.

A rooftop: Diroma

On top of Hi5 Mall in Sector 5, Panchkula: a cafe by day and lounge bar by night, with the Kasauli hills on one side and the city lights on the other.

Craft beer: the breweries

Of the four in the list above, The Great Bear is a rooftop brewery in Sector 26 and Boathouse a themed brewery near Elante Mall.

Wine with dinner

Virgin Courtyard in Sector 7 has one of the few proper Italian wine lists in the city, Black Lotus at the Taj often has live music, and Backpackers Cafe in Sector 9 serves beer and wine with its all-day menu.

Evenings without a bar

  • Sector 17 plaza — The pedestrian heart of the city: by evening the plaza fills with fountains, ice cream and, it seems, half the town. See Sector 17 Plaza.
  • Sukhna Lake at sunset — The whole city seems to walk the long promenade on the dam in the evening, with the Shivalik foothills behind the water. See Sukhna Lake.
  • Tagore Theatre — The city's main stage since 1962, in Sector 18. The state akademi programmes Punjabi and Hindi drama, classical music and dance, and many of its shows are free; evening shows usually start around 18:30.
  • Sound and light at the museum — The Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10 runs a sound-and-light show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 19:30. See Government Museum.
  • Late food — Amritsari Kulcha Hub in Sector 9 stays busy well past midnight with chur-chur kulcha; several Giani's parlours stay open late for kulfi-faluda and thick shakes.

Alcohol rules and drink safety

Alcohol laws, including the legal drinking age, vary by state in India, so ask your hotel what applies in Chandigarh, Mohali (Punjab) and Panchkula (Haryana). Drinking in public places such as parks is illegal, and alcohol sales often stop on major religious festivals, national holidays and election days. The UK Foreign Office warns of spiked drinks: do not leave a glass unattended or accept one from a stranger. Emergency number: 112. More in Is India safe? and emergency numbers.

Getting back at night

City CTU buses stop around 22:00 and there is no night service, so after ten it is Uber, Ola or Rapido. Book through the app rather than hailing a car on the street, and share the trip with someone. Drivers strike from time to time, so if you have an early flight, arrange a backup. Auto-rickshaws are easy to find, but agree the fare before you get in. More in getting around Chandigarh.
