Fine dining in Chandigarh
Fine dining in Chandigarh comes in two kinds: the five-star hotel restaurants of Sector 17 and Sector 35, and a handful of long-running independents. For North Indian, the choice is Saffron at the JW Marriott or Ghazal in Sector 17; for pan-Asian, Black Lotus at the Taj or Kylin Experience at Elante Mall; for Italian and a wine list, Virgin Courtyard in Sector 7. Here is how they differ and where to go before or after.
How to choose: by cuisine
All five sit at the ₹₹₹ end of the city's prices and have both vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus.
Saffron, JW Marriott, Sector 35-B (North Indian)
Refined North Indian and Mughlai in a five-star setting, with plated presentation and formal service. Kebabs are the signature; vegetarians are well looked after too, with paneer dishes, dal makhani and a tandoor that cooks for them as well.
Ghazal, Sector 17 (North Indian)
A long-standing sit-down room from the decades when the city's restaurant culture was taking shape: warm lighting, wooden interiors, soft instrumental music and a classic, carefully spiced Indian menu.
Black Lotus, Taj Chandigarh, Sector 17-A (pan-Asian)
Upscale Chinese and pan-Asian inside the Taj, with Thai, Japanese and Korean dishes alongside, elegant plating and deep vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus. Often with live music.
Kylin Experience, Elante Mall, 3rd floor (pan-Asian)
A polished mall restaurant with a show kitchen and live sushi and dim-sum counters; the dumplings and sushi are what people come back for. The family-friendly option of the five.
Virgin Courtyard, Sector 7 (Italian)
Whitewashed walls, blue shutters and an open-air courtyard; wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta and a thoughtful Italian wine list. The city's choice for a candlelit evening.
Where they are
Sector 17, the city centre, has Ghazal and the Taj with Black Lotus. The same sector has cheaper institutions for lunch: the Indian Coffee House, Hot Millions (since 1979) with its vegetarian salad bar, and Sindhi Sweets. Sector 35 has Saffron at the JW Marriott, plus the bars of Sectors 34 and 35. Sector 7 has Virgin Courtyard, a short ride from the cafe streets of Sectors 8, 9 and 10. Kylin Experience is in Elante Mall in the Industrial Area.
For dinner with Punjabi food rather than a tasting room, the city's best-known names are dhabas: Pal Dhaba in Sector 28 has been running since the 1960s, and Baba Chicken in Mohali since 1964. See restaurants in Chandigarh for the full range.
Before or after: a drink
Lava Bar, inside the Taj, is the grown-up option: a multi-level retro-styled bar with a long list of international wines and single malts and live bands. The Back Room in Sector 34-A calls itself the city's first speakeasy-style cocktail bar and makes most of its own syrups. Diroma, on the Hi5 Mall rooftop in Panchkula, is a cafe by day and a lounge bar by night, with the Kasauli hills on one side. Peddlers in Sector 35-C is the loud, long-running pub with a live band; book ahead for weekends. More in Chandigarh nightlife.
Good to know
