Animals in Chandigarh

← Chandigarh

Indian grey mongoose

The state animal of Chandigarh. It is active by day, unlike most small carnivores, so a city park at mid-morning is a realistic place to see one.

Urva edwardsii

Sambar deer

Sambar, nilgai and wild boar dominated the mammals recorded in Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary during the November 2025 camera-trap survey with the Wildlife Institute of India.

Rusa unicolor

Chital (spotted deer)

The golden deer that lures Sita away in the Ramayana is a chital, and the deer pair flanking a wheel is the emblem of the Buddha's first sermon.

Indian crested porcupine

In the November 2025 camera-trap survey of Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary, run with the Wildlife Institute of India, porcupines were recorded mostly at night, the same pattern as the sanctuary's leopards.

Hystrix indica

Indian leopard

In March 2020, during the lockdown, a leopard strayed into Sector 5 and was released in the Morni Hills. Camera traps set in Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary in November 2025 identified two individual adult male leopards.
