Where to stay in Ajmer
The choice in Ajmer is really a choice of distance from the Dargah. Sleep in the shrine quarter and you are steps from the morning prayers and the qawwali, in plain pilgrim lodging. Move to the station area for ordinary hotels within an auto ride, to Ana Sagar Lake for heritage hotels and quiet, or out to the Pushkar and Kishangarh roads for pools and spas. The stays above are grouped below by area.

The Dargah quarter: for pilgrims
The Khwaja Garib Nawaz Guest House on Langar Khana Gali is run in association with the shrine and booked through the Dargah Committee's own website, with AC and non-AC rooms; some face the Dargah. Al Rahman Guest House, arranged by a Khadim family (the shrine's hereditary servants) just behind the shrine, adds help with the rituals and the chadar offering. Lodha Inn Dharamshala has multi-bed fan and AC rooms for families and groups, simple meals and parking. Expect plain rooms; the Garib Nawaz Guest House has no lift and a devotional soundscape around the clock rather than quiet.
Between the station and the shrine: practical
Hotel Ajmer Inn is the budget hotel between Ajmer Junction and the Dargah, plain and clean, handy for a night or two before Pushkar. The Fern Residency, a four-star of The Fern eco-hotel chain, is close to the railway and bus stations and under 3 km from the Dargah, with 31 rooms and the Laziz restaurant. Good for a late or early train.
Ana Sagar Lake: heritage and calm
The greener, quieter side of town. Hotel Merwara Estate is a classified heritage property of 1887 on the lakeshore, about 50 rooms with a pool; ask for a Heritage lake-view room. The Merwara Palace above the lake has 47 rooms, a spa, a pool and a 400-seat banquet hall, so weddings are common. Mansingh Palace, a three-star built as a replica of an 18th-century fort, has 60 rooms, many with bay windows, a short walk from the lake. The Dargah is a rickshaw ride away. More on Ana Sagar Lake.
The Pushkar and Kishangarh roads: pools and space
Pratap Mahal, of the Taj group's IHCL SeleQtions, stands on the Pushkar Bypass Road between Ajmer and Pushkar: 88 rooms and suites in a white-marble haveli style, with spa, pool, the Aravalli restaurant and the Mahua bar. Ramada by Wyndham is on the Kishangarh (NH-8) approach, with 71 rooms, a pool and spa, an easy run to the airport and a short drive to the shrine. Vijai Mahal, a small homestay in a colonial-era house about 3 km from both the station and the Dargah, has a garden and terrace, and the owners can arrange bicycles or a car for Foy Sagar.
Staying as a guest of a Khadim family
For centuries the hereditary Khadim families who tend the shrine have housed and fed pilgrims in their own homes around the Dargah, traditionally without a set charge: guests leave a nazrana, an offering of whatever they wish. This is a living custom, not a hotel. A Khadim becomes your host, takes you through the rituals and the crowds and arranges the chadar (the cloth laid on the tomb) and the ziyarat (the visit to the shrine). It is arranged on arrival through the Khadim offices near the shrine, and it suits pilgrims at ease with informal, faith-based hospitality more than anyone who needs privacy or a fixed price.
Urs week and busy days
During the Urs (11–16 December 2026, expected) rooms near the Dargah are booked months ahead, and Pushkar, about 15 km over the hill, is the usual overflow. The dates cannot be fixed far ahead because they depend on the moon sighting, so hold the train first: Indian Railways reserved tickets open 60 days ahead. Every week, Thursdays and especially Fridays are the most crowded days at the shrine. After about ten at night rickshaws thin out, so on a late arrival ask the hotel to send a car. More on Pushkar.
