Maa Vaishno Devi Dham, Vrindavan

← Vrindavan

Maa Vaishno Devi Dham is a modern temple complex at Chhatikara, on the road into Vrindavan, known for its 141-foot statue of the goddess with a small seated Hanuman at her side. Visitor guides list no entry fee. Inside, pavilions dedicated to different deities tell their stories through wall paintings and captions, which makes it feel as much like a museum as a temple. It is not the famous cave shrine of Vaishno Devi near Katra in Jammu.

EntryFree

An unusual temple for Vrindavan: modern, more resembling a museum. A huge Durga Ma statue greets every visitor entering the city. Inside are pavilions dedicated to different deities, telling their lilas and stories through wall paintings and descriptions. Locally the complex is known by both names (Vaishno Devi Dham and Chaar Dham), and road signs use either.

An excellent place to learn more about the stories from sacred scripture in an engaging format, especially if you're just beginning your journey with Vedic tradition.

What to see

The statue. The goddess stands 141 ft high, with a small seated statue of Hanuman beside her. It was completed in 2010. It is the first thing you see as you drive into Vrindavan. Vaishno Devi is worshipped as a form of Durga, and here she is shown eight-armed (Ashtabhuja).

The temple-museum. Inside are pavilions dedicated to different deities, each telling their lilas (divine play) and stories through wall paintings and written descriptions. For anyone just beginning to read the Puranas and epics, it is an easy, visual introduction to the stories you will hear about in every other temple of Vrindavan.

Gufa darshan. Visitor guides describe a cave passage (gufa) inside, an echo of the cave shrine at Katra.

Timings and entry

Visitor guides list no entry fee and give the temple as open daily from about 7 am to 8 pm, with aarti and darshan through the day. The temple's former website is no longer online and there is no official timetable, so treat the hours as approximate.

Vaishno Devi Dham and Char Dham

Locally the area is known by two names, Vaishno Devi Dham and Char Dham, and road signs use either. They are in fact neighbours: a separate Char Dham temple, with a large seated Shiva unveiled in 2025, stands a short walk away. If a driver takes you to one, the other is next door.

How to get there

The complex is at Chhatikara, on the approach road to Vrindavan, so it is easy to stop on the way into town or on the way back to Mathura. An auto-rickshaw or taxi from central Vrindavan covers the distance; agree the fare before you set off.
