Tomb of Lal Khan

← Varanasi

AreaRajghat, near Malviya Bridge

Hardly any visitor to Varanasi sees this one: it sits out at Rajghat by the Malviya Bridge, past the point where the ghat walk ends, and it belongs to a different architectural world than the city around it. The domed tomb was raised in 1773 for Lal Khan, a minister at the court of Maharaja Balwant Singh of Banaras: Mughal-style funerary architecture in a city of Shiva shrines. Pink sandstone walls and the dome carry cobalt and turquoise glazed tiles, with chhatris (small open pavilions) at the corners. Quiet, garden-set, and one ASI ticket also covers the neighbouring Rajghat mound where ancient Kashi was excavated.
