Sarnath Deer Park

A shaded park behind the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar with an enclosure of spotted deer and waterbirds, recalling the ancient Mrigadava, the deer grove of Isipatana, where the Buddha is said to have given his first sermon. It is not wilderness and makes no claim to be: paths, trees, a small entry fee, open through daylight hours. What it offers, between the stupas and the museum, is somewhere for children to walk off an hour of archaeology and for everyone else to sit down under a tree.
