Open in India GOThe three seasons
Cool and dry, October to March. After the rains end, October still reaches about 34 °C by day, but the air dries out. November averages 14 to 31 °C, and December and January are the coolest months, with highs of 26 to 28 °C and nights down to about 9 °C. Rain is almost absent: 3 to 7 mm a month from December to March. February is still comfortable at 11 to 29 °C, and March warms to about 35 °C, which is why the India GO season chart marks it good rather than best.
Hot, April to June. April averages a high of 39 °C and May 41 °C, the hottest month of the year, with nights that stay around 25 °C and humidity in the mid-thirties. June is still about 37 °C by day, and the first monsoon rain arrives: about 114 mm over six days on average.
Monsoon, July to September. July is the wettest month, with about 331 mm over twelve days, and August follows with 250 mm and humidity above 80%. Highs drop to around 29 to 31 °C, but it is muggy. September tapers to about 163 mm. Each month has its own page: January, May, July, November and the rest are linked from the table above.
Weather and the temple day
Two things in Ujjain's ritual calendar meet the weather head-on. The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar starts at 4:00, and ticket holders are let in from about 2:30 to 3:00: in December and January that is the coldest hour of a night that averages about 9 °C, so bring a warm layer for the queue. In April and May average highs are 39 to 41 °C and the ghats along the Shipra are open to the sun; go to the river early and carry water.
Monsoon: floods on the ghats and the Shravan crowds
In heavy rain the Shipra rises over the ghats: in an August flood the small temples on Ram Ghat have stood underwater. Check conditions before planning a day on the river in July and August.
The monsoon is also Ujjain's busiest pilgrim season. In Shravan and Bhadrapada, Mahakal's palanquin leaves the temple for Ram Ghat every Monday in the Mahakal Sawari (19 July – 30 August 2027, expected), and traffic in the centre stops for half a day. Nag Panchami (6 August 2027, expected), when the Nagchandreshwar shrine opens for 24 hours, falls in the same weeks. Rooms and Bhasma Aarti slots for these dates go first.
Best time to visit by weather
For comfort, November to February: dry days with highs of 26 to 31 °C and cool mornings. October and March are good too, only warmer. If a festival decides the dates, plan for its season: Maha Shivaratri (6 March 2027) falls in the cool months, the Kartik fair by the Shipra runs from around Kartik Purnima in November, and the Simhastha (27 March – 27 May 2028, expected) sits in the hottest part of the year.
