AreaMahakaleshwar temple precinct

The walk to the Mahakaleshwar jyotirlinga, the shrine where Shiva is honoured as a pillar of light, now runs about 900 metres through carved stone. Opened in October 2022, the corridor carries 108 sandstone pillars, 76 sculptures and 52 murals retelling episodes of the Shiva Purana, entered through the Nandi Dwar and Pinaki Dwar gateways onto a plaza sized for some 20,000 people at once. Free to walk, and strongest after dark when the colonnade is lit; Mondays and festival days are the crowded ones. The precinct is still growing, from 2.8 hectares towards 47, ahead of Simhastha 2028.
