Kaliadeh Palace
A water palace of 1458, built under the Sultans of Mandu in the time of Mahmud Khilji on ground that had earlier held a Sun temple. It stands on an island in the Shipra, and the river itself is led through man-made tanks and channels around the building and beneath it, so the design is about moving water as much as about stone. Two Persian inscriptions in one corridor record visits by Akbar and by Jahangir. The Pindari raids left it wrecked; Madho Rao Scindia of Gwalior restored it in 1920, and his family still owns it. Best just after the monsoon when the river is full, and early in the day, as there is little shade and few facilities.
The one big site in Ujjain that is not about pilgrimage, and emperors signed the wall
