Durgadas ki Chhatri

← Ujjain

AreaChakratirth, on the Shipra

A domed cenotaph in Marwar style on the bank of the Shipra at Chakratirth, raised by the rulers of Jodhpur over the cremation place of Durgadas Rathore, the Rathore noble who sheltered the infant heir Ajit Singh against Aurangzeb and secured him the throne of Jodhpur. He died at Ujjain and was cremated here on 22 November 1718. Carved brackets and the chhatri roof, a pillared canopy over a memorial, make it an unmistakable piece of Rajasthan set down in a Malwa pilgrimage town. Almost nobody stops except travellers from Rajasthan, so it stays quiet; a short detour off the river route.
