Ashrams in Tirupati and Tirumala
Tirupati is not a town of retreat ashrams like Rishikesh; pilgrims come for the temple on the hill. People searching for an ashram here usually want one of two things. The first is TTD's own pilgrim lodgings, rest houses and dharmasalas next to the railway station and the bus stand. The second is a spiritual centre to sit in, and the town has a few: the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, a Yogoda Satsanga meditation centre and ISKCON.
TTD's pilgrim lodgings in Tirupati
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the temple trust, runs its own complexes in the town at low fixed tariffs. TTD's accommodation page lists them as current booking only: no advance reservation, a room allotted on the spot if one is free, and a 'day' counted as 24 hours from allotment.
Srinivasam Complex and Madhavam Guest House
Opposite the APSRTC bus stand, with rooms from non-AC to AC deluxe and, at Madhavam, AC suites. Srinivasam also has a free annaprasadam (meal) counter.
Vishnu Nivasam
A large TTD complex with non-AC and AC rooms and suites; like Srinivasam, it has a free annaprasadam counter.
Sri Venkateswara Dharmasala and Guest House
By the railway station: the dharmasala opposite it, the guest house to its north, both with simple rooms. TTD's free buses to the foot of the Alipiri and Srivari Mettu footpaths start from the railway station.
Govindaraja and Kodandarama dharmasalas
The second and third choultries, with basic rooms and free lockers, allotted through the Central Reception Office.
Staying up in Tirumala
TTD also runs the accommodation on the hill, with advance reservation on TTD's portal, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, and current booking on arrival if rooms are free. For the options see ashram stay in Tirupati, where to stay and budget hotels.

ISKCON Tirupati

The practice here is the pilgrimage
What Tirumala offers in place of an ashram routine is the pilgrimage itself. Many pilgrims come to fulfil a vow made to Venkateswara; the vows TTD lists include walking up the hills, tonsure at the Kalyanakatta (free of charge), anga pradakshinam and tulabharam. Two stone footpaths lead up, from Alipiri (about 7.8 km) and from Srivari Mettu (about 2.1 km), and walkers get Divya Darshan. In the temple, each day's sevas begin with Suprabhatam, the dawn hymn that wakes the god. Read more on darshan, sevas and tonsure, and see temples in Tirupati.
