- Mathura to Govardhan, 22 km
From Bhuteshwar crossing take a shared auto or a state bus from ~₹30, 30–45 minutes west on the Deeg road. A taxi on this leg is ~₹600–900 (all prices approx., August 2026).
The parikrama: what you are travelling for
Govardhan is a low sandstone ridge that no one climbs: the hill itself is worshipped, and the way to honour it is to walk around it. The parikrama (a clockwise circuit of something held sacred) is 21 km from Mansi Ganga or Daan Ghati, past Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund and the Mukharvind shrine, five to eight hours at walking pace.
- Clockwise, hill on the right. The route is an ordinary tarmac road with local traffic; the correct direction also keeps the oncoming flow in front of you.
- Start early. Set out before sunrise or after 16:00. From April to June the tarmac is unbearable by mid-morning, and pilgrims leave at four.
- Part of it by rickshaw. Visitors can walk part of the paved outer road in shoes, or hire a cycle- or e-rickshaw. Fix the price before the circuit starts: newcomers are quoted ₹3,500 for a ride that costs about ₹500; a full circle by e-rickshaw is ~₹400–600 (August 2026).
Two dates when nothing drives
On Mudiya Poono in July (next expected 12–19 July 2027) and on Govardhan Puja after Diwali (10 November 2026), millions arrive and vehicles are stopped at distant cordons. On those days plan to walk a long way from wherever the car or bus stops. More on Govardhan Puja.
