Getting there

Bangalore to Goa: overnight by bus or train, or a short flight

~14–15 h

From Bengaluru to Goa most people travel overnight. Sleeper buses leave in the evening, take about 12 hours and cost ~₹800–2,500, reaching Panaji and Margao in the morning. The one daily train, 17309, leaves Yesvantpur in the afternoon and reaches Madgaon at 03:25, about 12 hours, from ~₹360 in sleeper class (prices approx., August 2026). Flying is the quick option, but Goa has two airports, and the right one depends on your beach.

Three ways to make the trip

Overnight sleeper bus

~12 hours, ~₹800–2,500 (approx., August 2026). Evening departures from Bengaluru to the bus stands of Panaji and Margao, arriving in the morning. The simplest way when the trains are sold out.

Daily train

~12 hours, from ~₹360 in sleeper class (approx., August 2026). Train 17309 leaves Yesvantpur at 15:30 and reaches Madgaon at 03:25.

Flight

Into Dabolim (GOI) in the south or Mopa (GOX) in the north. Leave 2.5–3 hours for the road to Bengaluru's airport, 40 km north of the city.

By train: the 03:25 arrival

The one daily train is 17309 Yesvantpur – Vasco da Gama Express. In the official NTES timetable (checked in October 2026) it leaves Yesvantpur, in the north of Bengaluru rather than at the central KSR station, at 15:30, runs via Hubballi and reaches Madgaon, Goa's main junction in the south, at 03:25, then Vasco da Gama at 05:10. A weekly train, 17316, also passes through on Wednesdays. Timetables change, so check times on IRCTC or NTES before you book.

The 03:25 arrival is the awkward part: plan the first hours before you book, such as a taxi arranged in advance or a hotel that accepts a pre-dawn arrival.

Madgaon is the right station for the southern beaches. This train does not call at Thivim (the station for the northern beaches, ~17–19 km to Calangute) or Karmali (for Panaji and Old Goa, ~11 km), so for the north you continue from Madgaon by road.

By air: choose the airport by the beach

The choice is made by where you are staying, not by the ticket price. Mopa (GOX) in the north is 15–20 km from Arambol and about 35 km from Calangute. Dabolim (GOI) in the south is 25 km from Margao and 65 km from Palolem. The wrong one costs two hours of road.

Uber and Ola do not work in Goa, and touts offering "Uber" in the terminal are a scam. Use the prepaid desk or the GoaMiles app: from Dabolim, Panaji is ~₹1,100–1,200 and Palolem ~₹2,200–2,400; from Mopa the range is ~₹1,500–2,800, from ~₹900–1,000 when booked ahead in the app. Kadamba (KTCL) air-conditioned shuttles cost ~₹150–400, five to ten times less than a cab. After 22:00 airport transfers carry a surcharge of about ₹500. All prices are approximate, as of August 2026.

✅ Before you go

  • New Year fortnight. From mid-December to about 5 January transfers cost 60–70% more and scooter rental doubles. Booking a week ahead keeps the price normal.
  • Scooters need an IDP. A foreign licence alone is not enough: you need an International Driving Permit with category A, plus a helmet. Police checkposts fine ~₹500–1,000.
  • More on Goa. Beaches, areas and getting around are on the Goa page.
