Varaha Temple

← Pushkar

AreaOld town, near the main bazaar

The oldest temple in town, and easy to walk straight past on the way between the ghats and the Brahma Temple. It was built in the 12th century by the Chauhan king Anaji for Varaha, Vishnu's boar avatar, who by tradition appeared at Pushkar during Brahma's yagna. The temple was destroyed under Aurangzeb and rebuilt in the 18th century by Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur; the fortified compound now shelters a white stone image of Varaha. Entry is free and shoes come off at the step. Ten minutes here changes how the rest of Pushkar reads.
